Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, proudly delivering the New Zealand Upgrade Programme

SH1 Rolleston transport improvements

6 December 2022

Kia ora

Thanks to everyone who took time to give us feedback on the recommended plan for Rolleston earlier this year. It was very helpful to hear people's thoughts and insights and check in with the community again.

A summary of community engagement is now available on our website. It talks about the feedback we heard and addresses people's key concerns.

The project website has lots of helpful information such as a 'frequently asked questions' tab and the publications tab features project maps and a document summarising the options Waka Kotahi considered for Rolleston and reasons for the recommended plan.

Next steps

Findings from public consultation have been incorporated into the concept design, which is expected to be finalised in 2023.

Once the business case for Rolleston is approved, work will start on more detailed designs, gaining consents and progressing talks with affected property owners.

Working in partnership, Waka Kotahi and mana whenua - Te Taumutu Rūnanga and Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga - have started to explore opportunities on how cultural narratives could be incorporated into the project. While it's early days, we look forward to sharing more with the community as mahi progresses.

Working with the community

Our community engagement work is ongoing, with transport partners, stakeholders and people in the community.

We are collaborating with Selwyn District Council so plans and timing for local road upgrades can align with state highway and rail work.

The project team visited West Rolleston Primary School recently, together with representatives from the Council and the Ministry of Education. As a group we looked at developing options for safe outcomes for everyone. We received lots of feedback from the community about safety for tamarkiki outside this school. And we agree - we all want our tamariki to feel safe walking and cycling to school as expected traffic growth increases on Dunns Crossing Road - a key arterial supporting local and cross-district travel.

Near locations where new infrastructure is planned, talks continue with directly affected people about anticipated property impacts and access and to help us determine what land is needed for the project.

Later next year, as detailed planning progresses, the team will be working to understand potential impacts including noise and vibration, traffic impacts, constructability, air quality and more.

Please subscribe to updates so we can keep you informed on project developments.

Safer access and better connections for more people

Community engagement is an essential step informing transport planning and design. This process gives everyone an opportunity to have a say and helps the design team to deliver the best possible solution for the community.

Giving feedback on transport projects is different from voting. The purpose is to help the team gain a deeper understanding of community issues and experiences, various safety concerns and further insight into what is happening on the road.

While it's not always possible to meet everyone's requests, through weighing up often competing views, we aim to come up with the best solution for as many people as possible, on balance.
