The season is moving along rapidly and on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank all our active members for your continued support patrolling between the flags. Our efforts provide for a better place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the amazing beach we have at our disposal. Usually, the time spent on patrol is a non-event (which is good!) but we are occasionally called into action and on every occasion the feedback we get from Branch and the Emergency Services is exceptional. An event in January, as described by John Reeves later in this newsletter, is a fantastic example of how to manage an event and avoid a nasty outcome – well done Patrol 2! The Surf Sports program has had a huge start to the year and continues to gain momentum toward the Aussies in late March. There have been fantastic results and efforts at Branch and State levels for all age groups competing, from U11 right up to Masters – see the Surf Sports column later for a full rundown. Very healthy numbers have also been regularly attending training sessions through the season, and of note, it has been quite a sight on a Tuesday morning seeing over 50 children between the ages of 9-13 training from 5:30 am….. The Christmas/Summer holidays flew by, and I must thank and commend the Supporters Club for their efforts through the summer period. A solid trading period across the 7-week school holidays saw consistent visitor numbers, both new and returning, enjoying the club. Looking ahead – 40 years and counting. I hope that you have seen the information relating to the 40th Year Reunion on the 18th March 2023 and we will look forward to seeing many members on the day who are keen to reflect on our wonderful club through the years. And good luck to our Aussies competitors making the big trek to Perth in less than a month. Go Sunshine! LifesavingAs we move into the second half of the season I really want to thank all our amazing volunteer lifesavers who have been keeping Sunshine safe through a busy season. Some very hot and humid weather recently has seen larger than normal crowds and that’s been coupled with some challenging conditions. Everything continues to go well though, thanks in a large part to the strong patrol attendances. It is great to visit the beach on weekends and see so many red and yellow uniforms representing The Club and providing a vital service. I think over the summer most, if not all patrols have had their share of assists and rescues with many of our members entering the water in tough conditions to provide help to people in difficulty. I would like to make special mention of a very tough rescue performed by Patrol 2 in January. A call came through late in the day seeking assistance for a gentleman who had fallen from the rocks into the water around the corner from North Sunshine in the area of the entrance to the caves. Patrol 2 dispatched member Elise Watson on the club jet ski and Elise was able to pick the man up from the water in rough seas and return him to Sunshine Beach for urgent attention. The victim had considerable lower limb injuries that provided quite a confronting scene for our members. The patrol 2 team assisted QAS when they arrived and in general did an amazing job. We wish this gentleman all the best in his recovery. From all reports this rescue may have been more challenging in an IRB and it is further evidence of the importance of a jet ski for rescues on a beach like Sunshine and the bays to the north. I would like to pay special thanks to The Norris Group, whose incredibly generous sponsorship and support of SBSLC has meant the jet ski was available for use in this emergency. Another very pleasing aspect of this rescue was the assistance and support provided by two Lifeguards. Having just finished their shifts they didn’t hesitate to get involved and support the patrol. I feel as volunteers at Sunshine we have a great relationship with the professional lifeguards and this benefits both groups. I encourage all our members to get to know the lifeguards, say gidday when you see them and make them feel welcome around the club. The completion of a Bronze Medallion course in December has seen six new members joining the patrol teams at Sunshine. Thank you all very much for the time you have put into the training and for the boost you are providing to our patrols. And, the Bronze Medallion good news keeps on coming! I am so happy to see 12 candidates starting next week on our new Bronze Course, I can’t wait to welcome you all to our patrolling teams at the conclusion of your training. I would like to say a HUGE thank you on behalf of all patrolling members to Andrew Fraser. Andrew, who also holds a role as Director on the Supporters Club Board has truly given tirelessly for years in the role of maintaining our SSV vehicles and tractor and advising on the purchase and replacement of them as required. He has also shown amazing good humour and patience when I have called him at all hours to give him the bad news that we have broken something! Andrew has just handed over the role to Duncan Spring. Duncan, a member of Patrol 4, has stepped into the role, so if you see Duncan under the tractor swinging wrenches, say gidday and give him a hand! Lastly, I would like to like to ask all members to actively encourage friends, family and fellow community members to swim between the flags. It is a message we hear a lot, however sadly, and with a lot more of the season and the Easter break still to come, we have seen a number of fatalities outside the flags on the beaches in our area. Two of these incidents occurred just south of us, down towards Marcus and Peregian. In one of these incidents, Sunshine members from Patrol 11 were involved along with another Sunshine Member who was on a Branch Jet Ski at the time. In this incident our members worked beside QAS, performed CPR, comforted the victim's family and provided vital assistance in a very sad and confronting situation. These members were commended for their professionalism and efforts by the authorities attending. Buhk Wilkes Inspection - 4th February - - Patrol 12 - PC: Russell Quinn Out of a possible score of 360, Patrol 12 achieved 357 points! They lost 2 points on the questions and 1 point on the Resuscitation Task. This is an amazing effort. The Role:
Junior ActivitiesWe have had a great season of Nippers, with some perfect beach conditions, along with some typical Sunshine Beach challenging ones. It has been great to see so many families down on the sand each Sunday morning. Our Age Managers have done a wonderful job in guiding our Nippers through the six stations each Sunday. As a result, there has been a huge improvement in everyone’s skills in the water and lots of fun on the sand. Our U9 and U10 have been very committed, turning up to Coach Wes’s Skills for Life sessions every Tuesday morning to learn new skills (and their parents too!). Our awesome team of parents who volunteer their time each week has made our program run smoothly throughout the season. Big shout out to our Water Safety, JAC members, BBQ helpers, Age Managers and parents who help set-up and pack-down each week. Thank you! To finish off the carnival season we have our U8-U10 Branch Carnival on 4th March at Caloundra. This will be a great day out for the team to have fun and put the skills they have all learned in a more competitive environment. Good luck everyone! Sunshine Beach Nipper Events!! It's that time of year to celebrate our end of nipper's season with 2 events. The first is our Fun Day at Coolum Aqua Park, Sunday 5th March. This will be a really fun morning for everyone with a BBQ to follow the 9am session. To secure your spot make sure you book ASAP so that we can advise numbers to the park. Emails have been sent out with the booking link or click below. https://events.humanitix.com/nippers-fun-day-aqua-fun-park Nipper Awards Presentation will be happening Sunday 12th March at 10.30am in the Ocean View Room of the supporter's club. This is a great morning to acknowledge and celebrate all the hard work that the nippers have been putting in. If you would like to have lunch at the club after the presentation, we recommend you book a table asap so as not to miss out. No need to rsvp for the awards but please make sure you arrive before 10.30am so we can start on time. Surf sportsFollowing a very successful Branch Championships in January, the Sunshine Beach Surf Sports Team attended the 2023 State Championships at Mooloolaba over two weekends, taking teams covering all age groups from U11 to Masters! The State Championships sees the finest talent from around the state battle it out head-to-head. The event showcases individual and team events over all disciplines of Surf Sports. It's a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to show the individual results of their hard work at training, and to enjoy the camaraderie and fun of racing with their Sunshine teammates in the water and on the beach. After the weather disaster of last year's States, conditions were almost perfect over both weekends - though some Sunshine competitors might have preferred some larger waves, especially on the Junior (U11-U15) weekend! Congratulations to all of our Sunshine athletes for their performances, but also their effort, excellent attitude, and commitment they have shown in training and at these big events. And thank you to all the coaches and volunteers. Shout out also to Club Member, club sponsor, and official event photographer Dave Gleeson of sunny coast photos for his incredible pictures of the event and for getting some cracking shots of our Sunshine athletes in action and in celebration! We have a team attending these championships (Aussies) which is an annual event where members from Australia’s 314 Surf Clubs come together to compete in more than 480 beach and ocean events. It is the largest event of its kind, only comparing to the likes of the Commonwealth Games. You can follow the action and support our Sunshine Beach Team on the Live Feed which will be posted on the club's Facebook pages during the event. Youth DevelopmentDecember was Christmas party time which saw a group of 38 enjoy their Xmas break up in the Ocean View room at the club. The theme was Taco Xmas which saw "build your own tacos" catered for by Head Chef Darren, fresh popcorn (machine kindly lent from Sunshine Beach High School) and movie on the brand new amazing blow up movie screen, oh and a very liked "lollie table"! It was a great night. Thank you to all who helped, including Izabella and Summer who helped set up the area. January saw 13 of our SRC members attend “U14-15 Camp Commando” with Patrol Captain, Lachlan Cunneen, also attending as a Leader. This is one of the biggest groups to attend the camp and we appreciated that Lachlan took time out to attend. Feedback has been very positive, and the group did Sunshine proud. It was great that the group could travel to and from the club with Matt Duncanson and Guy Jones transporting the group in the club bus and Ute, a very big thank you to you both. The Sunshine Coast Youth Ball for U14-15 members is in May. I will be having a meeting with those that wish to attend in March. If you have any questions before then please feel free to contact me. It was a blast last year. Please remember that all the events run for our Youth and Cadet are for ALL U14-19 patrolling members 😊 Tara Lees - Director of Youth and Cadet MEMBER WELFAREChild & Youth Risk Management Strategies & Child Safe Awareness **REMINDER** All members over 18 MUST hold a blue card must ensure they have completed CYRMS (Child & Youth Risk Management Strategies) & CSA (Child Safe Awareness). SUNSHINE BEACH SURF CLUB, THE VERY EARLY DAYS The early patrols at what is now known as Sunshine Beach are linked to the then fledging Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club and the major development by a leading Australian Development Company called TM BURKE Pty Ltd. The Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club was formed in April 1928 ……and operated from its present site at Noosa Head’s main beach. Noosa Heads was only easily accessible by boat at the time as no bridge existed across Weyba Creek. Sunshine Beach was then called “Coolum Beach” and the Noosa Council had resumed land initially sold to a Mr Pilcher and Mr Woodrow and also sold to the Gympie land and Investment Company for non-payment of rates. The Noosa Council then entered into a contract with T M Burke for a large development of residential and commercial allotments (about 500 acres/xx hectares) in return for the construction of two bridges across Lake Doonella entrance and Weyba Creek with a road through Noosa Junction and ultimately to what the company called Noosa Beach Estates Golden Beach with the road ending at the present Surf Club site. The rock retaining walls in the small triangular park at the corner of Bryan and Duke street are part of that original development. The opening of the road, bridges and “Golden Beach” occurred on the 19th of October 1929, and was a major event reported widely in the local and national press. The Brisbane Telegraph on 20 October 1929 carried a full report with photos as did other publications of the day. The festivities included a surf carnival in the afternoon between three clubs for the TM Burke silver cup. This was won by Alexandra Headland, from Mooloolaba, and Noosa.
