Canterbury finish third at NZ Freyberg Masters

The NZ Freyberg Masters concluded on 4 November after a big week up at Motueka. This event marked the end of the Masters representative calendar after several preparation events leading into the showpiece week. Following an initial master’s trial fixture held on in July, subsequent Town vs Country, Canterbury vs Aorangi, and the South Island Interprovincial events the eventual Canterbury Masters team was named. Featuring a couple of familiar faces in Aaron Forsyth, Brett Turner, and tournament captain Jason Sincock, the team also featured a few new faces with Woo Bong Kim being selected at number 1 and James Howard at number 4.

Playoffs required to find Pollock Cup finalists

Play-offs were required for both Pollock Cup semi-finals held 6 November at Harewood Golf Club in cool, blustery conditions.

Clearwater played Waitikiri and Christchurch played Waimairi Beach. At the completion of the matches they were both even with three wins a piece. Therefore, a sudden-death playoff was required. Clearwater and Waitikiri could not be separated over five extra play-off holes, (1 – 2 – 3 & 9… repeat!) with both Rachel Eder and Kim Moggach playing some excellent shots.  Kim Moggach eventually won for Waitikiri on the 6th playoff hole. Equally the other sudden death play-off between Christchurch & Waimairi Beach was a very high standard of golf with Nicky Webb (Christchurch) winning out over Angela Gerken on the 3rd playoff hole.

In the match Christchurch v Waimairi Catherine Bell beat Angela Gerken 3/1, Nicola Webb beat Georgia Wayman 7/6 for Christchurch. For Waimairi Zaria Bourne beat Mel Brew 3/2, and Lyn Robertson beat Ina Lee-Hall 3/2. There were two halves - Olive Tapu v Deanna Matthews, and Jennifer Cho v Pam Chapman.

In the Clearwater v Waitikiri match for Waitikiri Kim Moggach beat Rachel Eder 2/1, Naomi Wallace beat Marg Coughlan 6/5, and Jenny Ahn beat Julie Battersby 4/3. For Clearwater Lexi Thompson-Hall beat Ginny Bolderston 2/1, Virginia Faas beat Chris Marple 5/3, and Lynda Vieceli beat Nicky Muir 1up.

Waitikiri will play Christchurch in the Final at Russley Golf Club on 27 November.

Cooper Moore to the fore at 2022 National U17 Eagles Championships

The National U17 Eagles Championships was played the week beginning 10 October at Mangawhai Golf Course. There are 15 Eagles Societies throughout NZ with each Society sending a 3-person mixed team of boys & girls to compete in individual & team competitions. This tournament sees some of the best young golfers in NZ from this age bracket as well as providing up-and-coming young players who are showing great promise an opportunity to be introduced to a more competitive side of golf and to also meet and make new friends, develop camaraderie and enjoyment through the game of golf.

This year after the Canterbury Qualifying event in July, Etienne Collier (Avondale), Deanna Matthews (Waimairi Beach) & Cooper Moore (Clearwater) traveled up to represent the Eagles Society of Canterbury. The course was in stunning condition with very challenging greens which tested all of the 60 players competing. The best Canterbury performer was Cooper Moore who won the Overall Boys Gross trophy with rounds of 74,72,72 to win by three shots. Deanna finished in 25th with rounds of 78, 79, and 84 while Etienne finished in 28th with rounds of 79, 84 and 81.
