May Newsletter 2022

News from Anglia HQ

Welcome to the May newsletter for Anglia Examinations.

Words from Steve Bannister, CEO Anglia Examinations:

"Just when we thought that relative calm was returning to the world post the worst ravages of the pandemic, we find the war in Ukraine and corresponding inflationary pressures bring a raft of new challenges. The adage that "uncertainty is the only constant" holds more truth than ever, and yet, despite all the turmoil we have faced of late, we find that Anglia continues to grow and thrive. This growth is a consequence of the passion, commitment and hard work demonstrated by colleagues here at HQ and by you- our partners worldwide. Thank you all.

We have been busy here at Anglia HQ. Exam volumes are buoyant, with exam sessions in Italy, Spain, Greece and Latin America growing fast. The number of universities who recognise our exams increases, and overall, we feel optimistic. So much so that we have submitted a five-year business plan to our parent - Chichester College Group, in which we have made a robust case for investment into Anglia Examinations.

If we are to continue to navigate this challenging business landscape successfully, we need to invest in our people, systems, sales, marketing, and new product development. We know that we cannot afford to stand still. Investing in our operations is what we will be doing over the coming months- all so that we can serve you better in the future.

Being part of the extended Anglia Network gives us confidence that by working together and harnessing collaboration, we can achieve so much more together than we can by working in isolation.

A great example of this is the collaborative project currently underway where Anglia partners in the UK, Spain, Italy, and Greece are working together to produce eLearning resources to support our English language teachers worldwide. In time these resources will be hosted on www.angliaonline.com and made available to all partners, not to replace the great value that teachers are uniquely placed to deliver to learners- but to help our teachers in their mission of helping as many people as possible to attain English qualifications. Watch this space for developments!

Wherever you are in the world and whatever the challenges you face, we wish you all the best and look forward to hearing of and sharing your news and updates as we continue to grow and learn together."

News from Europe

Anglia Cyprus

Greetings from sunny Cyprus. We hope you are all safe and well.

As always, May has been a very busy and a very difficult month for us. After the Easter break, a series of Speaking sessions was held in every district around the island and will continue to take place until the first week of June. At this point, we would like to thank all our speaking assessors for their loyalty, professionalism and support.

We are also preparing for our biggest writing sessions of the year on 25th and 26th June, with over 8000 candidates getting ready for their end of the year exam. The May session was held yesterday in all our districts and once again, our local office teams have managed to organise and deliver a very successful examination session.

We are also very happy to announce that “Frederick University”, one of the most prestigious universities here in Cyprus, will participate in our 18th June WebiFair. Claudia Beltran, George Middleton and Michalis Kyperesis had meetings with the university’s International Students Admissions Officer this month and we are definitely looking forward to this exciting project. We are very optimistic that this collaboration with the university is just the beginning.

Thank you very much.

Chris Kunz, President at Anglia Examinations Ibero-America, and Yanina Parada, Country Manager at Anglia Examinations Spain, met students and conducted a few interactive activities with them - everyone seemed to be truly engaged and enjoyed the workshop enormously.

It was fabulous to meet students and teachers face to face, watch their very positive reactions and feel their enthusiasm live. We hope we can see you all again soon!

FECEI Conference

Anglia Spain was present at the 10th edition of the annual FECEI Conference (Federación Española de Centros de Enseñanza de Idiomas). We had both, a physical as well as a virtual Anglia Stand – it was such an enriching experience to meet so many people not only from Spain, but also from many other countries!

We would like to thank FECEI for organising this first-rate event year after year. The combination of meeting people face-to-face as well as online was perefct. Massive thanks to all the members of FECEI who were in touch with us and made everything very easy and straightforward every time we had a query. We do believe in the importance of sponsoring these types of events and we will undoubtedly attend future editions of the Conference. Thanks to all the delegates for visiting both, our virtual and our physical stand.

Anglia Language & Culture Exchange Programme

During this month, Spanish students from different Anglia Examination Centres around the world gave their presentation at the 6th Language & Culture Exchange Programme organised by our friends from Anglia Latin America, who very kindly invited us to participate.

In the presentation, our students talked about traditional days and typical customs from Spain. Subsequently, students from Armenia, Colombia, Canada, Argentina, Russia and Uruguay asked them several questions. The interaction between students from different nationalities is genuinely perfect to practise English and it is also highly motivating for them all to keep gaining self-confidence in the production of the language. Congratulations to all participants and teachers who meet every week!

Congratulations to Students from The English Centre, College of Languages!

Students from our Examination Centre ‘English Centre, College of Languages’ in Almeria, who participated in the making of sample oral test videos earlier on this year, were recently presented with their well-deserved Certificates of Participation for being world-class volunteers and doing an excellent job. Well done.

There were online & paper-based exam sessions in the country in May. Students from Madrid, Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela, Barcelona, Tenerife, Granada, Ciudad Real, Malaga, Valencia, Almeria, Zaragoza, Orense and Lanzarote, among others, took their Anglia Exams this month. We wish the best of luck to all the candidates.

Invigilator Training Programme

In May we also trained Anglia Invigilators from our newest Examination Centres so they are ready for the forthcoming exam session in June. It was a really fruitful and interactive session where participants were willing to learn more and more about how to conduct Anglia exam sessions.

Examiner Training Programme 2022

The training programme came to an end this month and new Examiners and Speaking Assessors have already submitted their post-course tasks, whose feedback and reports will determine whether they will be able to start acting as Anglia Assessors in the near future. The last meeting was delivered by Alice Osman, Chief Examiner at Anglia UK, who presented the trainees with further practice and consolidation activities.

Standardisation for Anglia Examiners

Towards the end of the month, Alice Osman, Chief Examiner at Anglia UK, was in charge of conducting the annual standardisation session for examiners in Spain. standardisation sessions are essential as they aim to help all examiners have a common understanding of the marking standards and conventions. Needless to say, we were very proud to have a full house. Thank you, Alice, for always supporting and guiding us all.

News from Africa

Anglia Morocco

During the month of May was busy for Anglia Morocco.

Our partners in the Fez under Mr. Youssef Ben-Naouer finally opened their center and began classes.  Because it is an association, they are recruiting volunteer teachers to get established in the Fez Region and American Group International will help recognize and give a support base for them as needed. They started with a workshop by Mrs. Faten Hijazi, from Lebanon.

During the middle of May we held our testing in Agadir. It was a new experience by all. The students were challenged by the exams. To have an international exam actually showed them the areas they are needing improvement, even though they did not receive any results, as yet.

Our partners in Laayoune under, Mr. Zaine Daoudi are now putting the finishing touches on the center there and will be opening in the south in a few months.

Our partner in Mirleft, Garnetta Johnson is visiting the community centers and trying to get the community to accept the presence of English in this area. Currently, there is no presence in this area. Anglia Morocco will travel there during the summer to help with the mission efforts. We will see about starting skill trainings along with English in this region. We have had calls from English countries where a source is needed in Mirleft.  Many families would want to return to that area to invest. Our institute in Agadir currently has two students learning English from that area.

Anglia Morocco traveled to Taroudant to start working with a center named FOCUS. Mr. El Mehdi Amahou welcomed us and that contact looks promising. There is no English presence there that we are aware of with international exams. The picture attached is the Director Mr. Amahou, his assistant and Mr. Abdelhak Lam, head of Anglia Sales.

News from Asia

Anglia Indonesia

Anglia Indonesia is reaching out to more and more English learners in Indonesia to dare to dream by organizing a digital campaign called #IDaretoDream. The goal of the campaign is to share the importance of learning English confidently; hence, taking learners closer to their dreams.

We started the campaign by introducing an Indonesian-born star Niki Zefanya as the role model, hoping the viewers will find inspirations to dream big and put their all to achieve it. More posts on the #IDaretoDream are coming. A total of six Anglia students have been interviewed last week, and their inspiring stories will be shared soon. Please look forward to it!
