Christmas is just around the corner and we are busy programming the work for next year.

We thought we would take this opportunity to give you a brief update on the work that has occurred so far and the work due to start in the New Year.

Thank you for your patience and co-operation over the past year - we very much appreciate it.

Wyndham Street

The road work to reseal and widen Wyndham Street is almost complete. The chip seal was laid over the past few days. This will be left to settle over the Christmas period with the asphalt being laid in January.

We have listened to feedback from Wyndham Street residents and their concerns about the vehicle speeds on this residential street. We have deisgned a series of kerb build outs including a traffic island at the Oak Crescent intersection to provide a safer area for pedestrians to cross. These build outs will also be planted to increase the amenity in the area.

What's next

Mulgrave Street closure

In early January 2019 we will begin work to close Mulgrave Street at the intersection with Salisbury Street. This change is in response to residents' concerns about safety at the right turning bay at the Salisbury and Mulgrave Street intersection due to the increased volume of traffic using Salisbury Street. The corner is narrow, and some trucks use the right turn lane to navigate the corner, making it unsafe for any vehicles waiting to turn right from Mulgrave Street.

Mulgrave Street will be closed at the eastern end, preventing vehicle access from the intersection with Salisbury Street.  Access for cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained.  Vehicular access to this eastern portion of Mulgrave Street, and to Durham Street, will be via Bamfield Street. Native planting will also be included to create a visual cue that the street is closed and increase the amenity in the area.

We have received feedback from residents concerned about turning into Bamfield Street from Salisbury Street. For this reason, we have proposed no parking lines at the Bamfield and Salisbury Street intersection. This is to provide extra road space for vehicles waiting to turn right, meaning other traffic can pass safely.

We will be in touch with affected residents in the new year to discuss the plans.

February 2019 works

The works at the SH3/Cambridge Avenue intersection and York Street intersection are due to commence in February 2019. We will send out further information in January 2019 about the works in these areas, including advice on detours. We will also be consulting directly with residents close to these works.

Ashhurst Christmas parade

Some of the Ashhurst and Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway project teams had the pleasure of participating in the Ashhurst Christmas parade.

Those involved had a wonderful time and we would like to thank the organisers for arranging such a great day out.
