Six Western faculty members have been recognized with Research Excellence Awards for their scholarship and the solutions they're developing to address global challenges. 

Goods’ gift funds English Literature Chair

A new $1.5-million donation from alumni Jim and Eva Good continues their long history of giving to Western. The latest gift will help create the James and Eva Good Chair in English Literature, which they hope will attract top talent and ignite a deep love of the arts among students. 

Using AI to reduce food waste

Ivey and engineering professor Joshua Pearce, engineering professor Soodeh Nikan and their team have created a new AI model that achieves near perfect accuracy in detecting ripeness and disease in strawberries, offering farmers an open source tool for improving crop quality and reducing food waste.

International observe the moon night 

Make your own moon crater, touch moon rocks and play lunar bingo from 2 to 5 p.m., then observe the moon through telescopes during the next Cronyn Observatory public night.  

September 20  
Bike to campus day 

Hop on your bike and ride to work for the fourth annual bike to campus day. A group photo will be taken in the open space in front of McIntosh Gallery at 8:30 a.m. Resources will be available for anyone interested in learning more about active transportation.

Fall exhibitions: Opening reception
 
Celebrate the opening of From Elsewhere to Here and In Search of a Loss of Self: The Language of Alterity at McIntosh Gallery. Guest curators and exhibiting artists will be in attendance. Remarks begin at 6:30 p.m.  

September 24 (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) 
Are you smarter than your laptop? 

Chief AI officer and computer science professor Mark Daley will explore advancements in artificial intelligence and its implications for education, work and human thought. Register online.

Join the autumn 2024 academic procession 
Autumn Convocation is Oct. 23 to 25. Members of faculty, Senate, the Board of Governors and emeriti professors/archivists/librarians are invited to take part in the academic procession. Register online.  

Cycling month 
Participate in this year’s cycling challenge by tracking your bike communte through Strava until Oct. 4. The top five cyclists with the most kilometres will win prizes. 

Campus road closures update
For the safety of picketers, students, employees and visitors to our campus, we have continued road closures to decrease the volume of vehicles that would proceed through picket lines and cut through campus. To help improve traffic flow at the end of the day, all roads—including Lambton Dr., Huron Dr., Perth Dr., and the eastbound lanes of University Dr. and the Bridge—will be open Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. All parking lots remain open, and pick-up and drop-off locations are still available. Please allow extra travel time. View maps and more information.
