Kia ora koutouIt has been another busy winter for transport projects around Rotorua, with some important mahi undertaken around the region. We’re now gearing up for the warmer season and hoping for better weather to deliver our extensive programme. Road maintenance around the region takes another step forward with the first road rebuilding under way outside Rotorua Airport and other works starting. We’d like to thank everyone for your patience when disruptive or long-term work is underway, particularly on State Highway 30 at both Te Ngae Junction and on Te Ngae Road in Eastside, and for upcoming work on the State Highway 5 Utuhina bridge. It is disruptive for people who live, work or run businesses in these areas. Please continue to support the businesses who are open throughout these works. There is always access into them, it may just be a different route than normal. |

Spring sees road renewal season underwayThe start of spring signals new growth on plants and trees, and also sees road construction crews making the first moves of the annual road renewal season. Crews are out completing pre-seal repairs ahead of chipsealing, as well as undertaking the first road rebuilding and asphalt resurfacing works. “The sheer volume of work we need to undertake means that road users may well come across multiple worksites on their journey. As such, it’s critical that everyone plans ahead and understands how their journey will be impacted so they can reach their destination on time,” says Roger Brady, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Bay of Plenty System Manager. Road users can use the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner (journeys.nzta.govt.nz) to view all disruptive activity and potential hazards on the network at any point in time. Other channels such as social media and weekly bulletins will highlight key worksites that will cause significant disruption. |

Road rebuilt underway - SH30 Rotorua AirportRebuilding 410m of SH30 Te Ngae Road has started between Rotorua Airport and 875 Te Ngae Road. The work will continue through to mid-October. Temporary traffic management will be in place, and there will be one lane available in each direction at all times to minimise disruption. Rebuilding roads generally means removing the existing road structure before we can bring in new material to build it back up. To do this we need accompanying traffic management to keep everyone safe. These works are weather dependent, so may need to be postponed, delayed, and/or extended beyond the expected completion date. |

Road closure and detours SH5 Old Taupō Road to close for Utuhina Stream bridge worksThe Utuhina Stream bridge on SH5 Old Taupō Road needs critical resilience work and this is scheduled to begin on Monday 25 September. Over time erosion has exposed piles beneath the southern abutment. To resolve this issue we need to remove a section of road and install sheet piles to prevent further erosion from occurring. A road closure between Sunset Road and Pukuatua Street will be in place for approximately three weeks. During this time most traffic will be able to follow local detours. Local residents and business owners will be able to access their properties at all times and pedestrians and cyclists will have access through the worksite at all times. All other vehicles will be detoured as per the routes shown in the map. We understand that SH5 is a very busy urban road within Rotorua, and a key route for High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMV) and heavy haulage vehicles travelling through Rotorua. Closing the road significantly reduces the time crews are required to be on site, minimising overall disruption. HPMV vehicles will need to use SH1 and either SH5 or SH30. The 21 metre Utuhina Stream bridge was constructed in 1955, and carries approximately 25,000 vehicles per day. We urge all motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys. |

Night closures in place for SH5 Old Taupō Road between La Trobe Place and Malfroy RoadRoad resurfacing work takes place this week on SH5 south of the SH30A intersection. The work takes place overnight between 7pm and 5am from Sunday 17 September for one week. The road will be closed to vehicles travelling south with detours in place. Heavy vehicles will be detoured via SH30A and SH30. The light vehicle detour is the same, however light vehicles can use Fenton Street between SH30A and SH30 (Hemo Road). |

SH30 Eastern Corridor Stage TwoWork on the SH30 Eastern Corridor Stage Two is progressing well, with the second zone well underway. The traffic lights at the intersection of SH30 Te Ngae Road and Basley Road are now in use and the eastbound detour via Vaughan Road has been removed. There are still multiple worksites active between Iles and Ōwhata roads, and as work progresses layouts may change, so be aware and follow the temporary traffic management signs and markings. Access for local residents and businesses is kept open throughout the works - please continue to support our local businesses. |
||
SH30/SH33 Te Ngae Junction nearly completeThe new roundabout and layout at the SH30/33 Te Ngae Junction (Whakatāne turnoff) is nearly complete and is operating as designed - improving safety to everyone using the intersection. Temporary speed limits remain in place until the final surfacing is completed in the next few weeks when warmer nights provide the best conditions for sealing. |
