Click here Freshers and returning students were welcomed to Michaelmas Term with the sight of a completely refurbished Club Room and brand new Coffee Bar, thanks to the creativity of some Wolfson architecture students and the hard work of the Clerk of Works. Also newly renovated is the J Block accommodation, which underwent refurbishment during the summer months, and the room formerly known as Plommer A, which is now a space for Fellows to study and meet when they are College. New faces in the Tutorial Office. Welcome Dr Susan LarsenIncoming freshers were greeted by a few new faces in the Tutorial office. Dr Susan Larsen has joined us as Senior Tutor. With a background in Russian studies at the Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages, Susan was most recently Acting Senior Tutor at Fitzwilliam College. Recent graduate, alumnus Joe Cotton, also joined the team as Student Recruitment Officer. The President was on hand to congratulate the Wolfson College Boat Club as they were awarded both the Michell and The Pegasus Cups — the first time ever that a College has won both in a single year. President to visit southeast AsiaThe President, accompanied by the Development Director, is to visit Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia at the end of November. Whilst there, she will meet with alumni and other Wolfson members, and make keynote speeches to at the ASEAN Emerging Research Conference, to women in science at the BIOS2018 Symposium, Mechanobiology Institute, NUS and to medical students at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU. Spotlight on ResearchPhD student Gabriela Doria has a passion for plants. Not just those in the College gardens and the local nature reserves where she leads walks with the Wolfson Plant Society, but in the lab, where she uses an array of techniques to explore the mysteries of pollination. News from the Development OfficeNew Engineering BursaryTom Ridgman, Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College, recently retired from the Department of Engineering's Institute for Manufacturing. A number of his former students have decided to mark Tom’s retirement in a positive way. They are currently fundraising to set up a bursary in Tom's name to support a student in hardship. Rowan Williams Cambridge StudentshipOpen to students from an area of instability or conflict these scholarships are available to students with an offer of admission and covers tuition fees and maintenance, and in some instances, students’ upfront expenses such as travel and visa costs. Their launch follows the recent announcement by the Vice- Chancellor of a new £500M funding campaign to support students from less well-off backgrounds. In her role, she collaborates with the Development Director to oversee the work of the Development & Alumni Relations team and to manage the major gifts portfolio by developing relationships with Wolfson’s alumni, members and friends. Following graduation from EM Lyon Business School in France, Géraldine started her career in the media industry in Spain before working for BBC Worldwide. She was Head of Business Development for Europe with Bell Educational Services in Cambridge for over five years. She is fluent in English, French and Spanish. Géraldine can be contacted by email.
