Work’s going well on safety upgrade on State Highway 7 between Waipara and Waikari.

The old concrete parapets on the Weka Creek Bridge near Waipara are being removed and work to replace them with new safety barriers is expected to get underway this week.

Stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h speed restriction will be in place during the work, which should be complete in early March.

Motorists are urged to allow an extra five minutes to travel through the site.

Once work on Weka Creek Bridge is finished, contractors will begin installing new safety barriers on the Antills and Archers Bridges.

Much of the work through Weka Pass is complete. Over the next week or so crews will be installing signs and flexible safety barriers in some areas. This work is not likely to cause delays to traffic.

This project is part of the Safe Network Programme - a collaborative, prioritised programme of proven safety improvements on high risk routes across New Zealand.

Contractors are installing safety barriers to help stop people dying or being seriously injured in a crash, and rumble strips to give drivers a wake-up call if they stray across the centre-line.

New  signs to warn drivers of risks such as sharp corners and narrow bridges are being installed, along with road markings that are easier to see at night and in the wet.

The project is on track to be completed by mid-2019.
