Driving on the new black stuff - QEII Drive

We have finished the first half of the two roundabouts in QEII Drive, it’s now time to move traffic over onto this side of QEII Drive so we can build the other halves. The traffic swap-over will happen early on Friday morning 11 October.

The road around the roundabouts is curvy so you need to slow down. There will be a 30km/h speed limit through the roundabout construction area, this lower speed reflects the normal speed used when entering a full roundabout. Please drive to the changed conditions and take care.

New asphalt for Cranford Street too

We are starting the Cranford Street road repairs and asphalt surface work on Monday 14 October.

To start, traffic will be moved all the way to the east (Mairehau) side of the road, so we can mill, repair and asphalt the opposite (west) lanes. This work will take two to three weeks.

Knowles Street, Weston Road and McFaddens Road will be closed on the west (St. Albans) side of Cranford and left-in left-out on the east side.

Once we are finished we will switch this traffic set-up to the other side of the road.

This work, from Placemakers to south of Knowles Street will be done during the day.  The Cranford/Innes Intersection asphalting will start in late-November and this work will need to be done at night.

Pesky Pūkeko

We have a pūkeko problem, these beautiful wetland birds seem to enjoy pulling our newly planted natives out of the ground.

To give our native planting a chance to establish we need to move the pūkeko out of the motorway area for a while.

From mid-October we will place two bird scaring gas guns within the project alignment.  This option is not harmful to the birds or the environment. The gas guns are noisy, but we will do our best to keep them at a distance from homes.

Prestons Road surcharge ready for removal

The two big piles of shingle on Prestons Road will reduce by about one third over the next weeks as we remove the surcharge (extra weight) we have on these abutments.

Our bridge construction will then get underway and the bridge will be finished by mid-2020.

How many engineers does it take to change a light bulb on the Waimakariri Bridge northbound?

Actually, I'm not sure but it will take one night on Wednesday 9 October to change all the light bulbs on the northbound bridge. To do this work we will have one northbound lane on the Waimakariri Bridge closed overnight.

Please drive carefully.

Hills Road update and QEII/Innes Road Roundabout night work

Work at Hills Road/QEII Drive is taking a little longer than expected but we now hope to have this intersection re-opened by early November.  We are aware this closure is making access in this area difficult and we are sorry for this delay.

Nightly from Sunday 6 October till Tuesday 8 October, we will be installing a pipe across the western arm of the QEII/Innes roundabout, our apologies for any disturbance this may cause.

Nightly lane closures on SH1 southbound continue

Nightly lane closures southbound on SH1, between Tram Road and the Waimakariri Bridge will continue until the end of November.

We are installing cables for street lights, traffic signals, telecommunication and power from 6pm to 5.30am every night except Friday and Saturday nights.

There will be a 60km/h speed limit in place during this closure, but the Tram Road on-ramp will stay open.

Radcliffe Road Over-bridge update

The central pier and bankseats at Radcliffe Road Overbridge are nearly ready for beams. We will start placing these in mid-October and will need to close one side of Radcliffe Road while we do this. We will use a stop/go set-up to maintain two-way traffic through this area.
