Government backs growers with a new package of support

Growers in the UK will benefit from a commitment to protect their interests in future trade deals, boost domestic fruit and veg production and a new investment into technologies.

Representatives from the food supply chain came together at Downing Street for the UK Farm to Fork Summit to identify ways to boost growth, drive innovation, improve sustainability and support the long-term resilience at every stage of the food system, from farming to manufacturing, distribution to retail.

The horticulture sector is worth £5 billion across the UK and the government will support the industry to boost production and extend the growing season by:

• Replacing the retained EU Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organisation Scheme when it closes in 2026 with an expanded offer as part of its new farming payment schemes.

• Help the controlled horticulture sector to overcome barriers in accessing government schemes by looking at how the sector is classified.

• Making it easier to build new glasshouses with changes to national planning policy.

Act now to get ahead of powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is the name for a group of fungal pathogens that can cause severe damage to a range of common edible and ornamental crops, characterised by white, powdery growths on the plant.

The fungi attack leaves, flowers and fruits of plants – causing drastic yield losses that translate to millions of pounds of lost value each year to UK growers.

Symptoms of powdery mildew
As a number of different fungi can cause a powdery mildew infection, with many specific to their host species, there aren’t always consistent symptoms – especially in early infection. However, there are some common signs:

Early infection:
• Distortion of leaves
• Discoloured spots on leaves

Late infection:
• Characteristic ‘powdery’ mass on stem, leaves, flowers and fruits

Fargro’s range of biopesticides provide an efficient and ecologically friendly manner of combatting powdery mildew infections.

• AQ10
• SB Plant Invigorator
• Taegro

Highlights from the 'Drone Spraying of Pesticides' event: Advancing best practices and cutting-edge technology

We recently participated in the "Drone Spraying of Pesticides" event held in York, UK, on 23-24 May 2023. This event, hosted by the UK Health and Safety Executive Chemical Regulations division, in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD - CRP), aimed to shape the best management practices for drone spraying applications.

During the event, we had the privilege of supporting Robert Pearson, Andy Sproson, and Scott Dowell from AutoSpray Systems as they demonstrated their cutting-edge technology at Stockbridge Technology Centre on day three.

Many thanks also to the team at Drone Spray Precision, represented by Doug Price and Sam Powell for providing excellent demonstrations and showcasing the best practices in chemical handling techniques, an integral part of the drone spraying process.

This event was an incredible opportunity for the industry to come together, exchange knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of drone spraying applications. We are thrilled to have been a part of it and look forward to incorporating the valuable insights gained into our work at Fargro.
