West Australians Lauren Browne and Riley Lyall will represent the pride of our state as they compete in the Oceania Eventing Senior Rider and Young Rider Championships this week in Melbourne.

The championships are taking place alongside the Melbourne International 3 Day Event from June 9 - 13 at Werribee National Equestrian Centre.

Twelve Australian combinations will compete against the Kiwis in a showdown that provides athletes with the opportunity to gain Championship-level experience as part of a representative team in the Southern Hemisphere.

Browne and her horse Skys Da Limit will compete in the Senior Rider Championships, while Lyall and his horse GI War Machine are part of the Young Rider Team.

As we draw closer to the start of the championships, you can learn more about Lauren and Riley as well as their journey to competing in the championships.

OTTWA AND EWA HEAD TO GERALDTON FOR LATEST CLINIC

Off the Track WA and Equestrian WA made our way to Geraldton over the WA Day long weekend for another fantastic clinic.

Although a little cold in the mornings, the Mid West delivered us perfect conditions for the clinic during the weekend.

Our EWA Accredited coaches were Level 2 General Coach Rebecca Thomas, Level 1 General Coach Kellie-Ann Crowe and Level 1 General Coach Diane Colley.

A total of 33 riders and 41 horses participated over the weekend. The feedback from everyone involved was positive and we thank the Geraldton community for their support of the event.

Off the Track WA supports and promotes retired thoroughbreds and standardbreds in their second careers as companion, pleasure or performance horses.

Visit the Off the Track WA website for further information about the program.

EA EQUINE MEDICATION CONTROL – NATIONAL SWABBING STEWARD SEMINAR

EA and EWA will be running a promotional course on Saturday 18 June for interested people wanting to become an EA Medication Control Program Steward as well as giving the opportunity for those current stewards needing a refresh. The course will be presented by EA's NMCO Dr Penny Dow.

What is a Medication Control Program?

The Medication Control Program (MCP), or Swabbing, is the testing of a horse’s urine and blood samples to ensure that all horses are competing under the EA and FEI competition rules - without being influenced by prohibited substances - to create a level playing field.

In Western Australia, EWA administers the MCP for national events for all disciplines held in this State (excluding FEI sanctioned events) to conduct equine medication control at selected and random events. This is funded from a levy from each new horse registration in the State.

What is the Role of a Medication Control Swabbing Steward?

At the instruction of EWA, a Medication Control Swabbing Steward is required to:

• Attend a nominated event;
• Notify the competitor(s) of the horses(s) that have been selected for testing;
• Stay with the horse at all times from the time of notification of swabbing selection until the testing is complete;
• Work with the nominated veterinarian to ensure that all appropriate forms are completed properly;
• Send samples to the nominated laboratory for testing (unless this is carried out by the attending veterinarian).

For more information including pricing and to register, download the EA Officials Course Entry Form.

TRIPLE CASH BONANZA & SPOT PRIZES

Following on from the popularity of these two initiatives last year, the Show Horse Committee will again be conducting the Triple Cash Bonanza and Spot Prizes at its shows in 2022.

The Triple Cash Bonanza is a random draw for a prize pool of $1,000 for all eligible EWA members. To be eligible for the Triple Cash Bonanza you must attend and compete at the Autumn Pageant, the Winter Gala and Horse and Rider of the Year. Please note that competing in a Newcomer event does not qualify as not everyone has a Newcomer.

You are eligible if you own any horse or pony which has competed at all three shows. It does not have to be the same horse or pony. You are eligible if you ride and compete at all three shows even if you do not ride your own horse or pony.

Your name will go into the random draw at the Show Horse Awards function to be held provisionally in November and you could win the top prize of $500, or one of four prizes of $125. Come along and support all our shows to be in with a chance for this great prize draw.

The random draw for Spot Prizes at the three shows last year was also a popular concept. One of our Committee members prepares these and they are drawn on the day of the show.  Listen to the public announcements and you could be the lucky winner.

HIGH PERFORMANCE CLINIC WITH PHIL LEVER ANOTHER RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Saachi Travers shares her experience at the recent High Performance clinic with Phil Lever

Annabelle and I had such a brilliant time with Phil Lever at the latest High Performance Clinic! She is a tricky horse to ride and can be difficult to get balanced and Phil really helped us out with a few problems.

A massive thing I took away from the clinic was using my seat and legs before my hand. Annabelle is forward and can be strong so when in the saddle she likes to go forward, but with the help of Phil we changed this and she learnt very quickly that a half halt now comes from sinking into the saddle.

We also had some issues into doubles, as she is so scopey and loves to jump huge over any fence so she can struggle and can get too big when jumping through doubles. Phil told us to come in super quietly, stay tall, keep the leg and sink into the seat and let her jump up to me!

This allowed us to really start making the distances well. We did lots of fences off short turns and this helped settle the canter and make me ride into a rhythm with Annabelle.

We took so much away from this clinic with Phil considering I had pneumonia during the whole thing and I was extremely weak but we worked with it and i’m glad I kept pushing. I smashed goals like being able to settle her easily and really focus on keeping my eye!

Overall we had such an amazing time and the mare keeps getting better and better, I utilised all this information and she jumped the most beautiful and lovely rounds at the recent Busselton Winter Showjumping, jumping her first 130 class and gaining a 3rd in the Silver Series class.

I'm extremely happy with how my girl is coming along with all our hard work and commitment and we are so excited for the future clinics and rest of the season! Thankyou to everyone who makes these clinics happen!

WAYER is the first event in the WA Farm Shop FEI Eventing Grand Slam for 2022. Horse and rider combinations in all * classes are eligible to earn points in this exciting Leaderboard designed to link the five FEI events held in Western Australia.

The Grand Slam has been designed to help raise the profile of FEI events for the benefit of riders and sponsors alike, to encourage WA’s national, international, and Olympic hopefuls with the kind of atmosphere they can expect at top level competition, and to help the five Organising Committees with additional funding needed to run an FEI event.

Results will be tallied after WAYER and the next competition will be Dryandra, followed by Wooroloo (Perth Horse Trials), Fairbridge (Southern Hills Eventing) and the final placings will be decided at Capel (Swan River Horse Trials).

WA Farm Shop is proud to be associated with the Eventing Grand Slam for the second year in a row and wishes all riders a safe, successful and healthy 2022.
