The Month Ahead: What have we done and what is coming up?

After taking a short break over the 2018/2019 holiday period, the team delivering the SH1 and Tarewa Road Intersection Improvements have been hard at work. January and February have seen significant progress made by the team, which you can read more about in this update.

Overnight on 29 and 30 January, eight beams were delivered and installed on the new Otaika Bridge. The beams were each 23 metres long and had to be delivered from Auckland one at a time on oversized truck and trailer units. To reduce the impact on SH1 traffic, the beams arrived onsite and were installed outside peak hours. The operation was declared a success after the eighth beam was installed just after midnight on 30 January.

This month the team also extended the service trench along SH1 and on Tarewa Road, making the most of the extra space created by the traffic management onsite. We now are building four sections of the service trench at once.

Our site will continue to be busy during the next month and throughout 2019. This means that there will be some noticeable changes in the next month, please read on to find out more

What have we done?

January and early February

• Delivered and installed the eight beams for the western side of the new Otaika Bridge.

• Began building the western ‘wing walls’ for the new Otaika Bridge. These will act as retaining walls to hold the earth on the sides of the bridge.

• We continued relocating the existing services into the section of the new service trench between Russell Turner Accountants and number 40 Otaika Road.

• The service trench has extended further north and south on SH1, as well as on Tarewa Road.

• Construction continued to build a number of new retaining walls and acoustic fences on private properties. These will support SH1 once it has been widened to four lanes for both north and southbound traffic.

• We removed the traffic islands at the SH1 and Tarewa Road intersection which has allowed the team sufficient room to undertake the road widening and intersection improvements.

What will we do?

February and March

• We will continue to build the new service trench along SH1 and on Tarewa Road. As the work progresses, specialist teams will install services such as water, telecommunications, gas and drainage that will service homes in the work area.

• As we complete each section of the new service trench, we will backfill them. This will allow us to remove the metal plates which are used to maintain access to driveways.

• The team will install the new service trench across Matipo Place. Please know that vehicle access to Matipo Place will be maintained while this work is undertaken.

• Continue building the western side of the new Otaika Bridge.

• Continue construction of the new acoustic fences and retaining walls on properties along Otaika Road.

• Continue preparation work for the new SH1 northbound lanes in Tarewa Park.

Traffic Impacts

The current right turn closures at the SH1 intersection with Tarewa Road will remain in place until late 2019. This will allow construction to continue as the work cannot be completed while the right turns are still in place. It will also help to keep our team and the public safe during construction. Please support the Tarewa Road businesses while the SH1 and Tarewa Road Intersection Improvements are underway.
