Further improvements to the Forgotten World Highway to get underway in the new year

With designs now complete and property acquired, we’re in a good position to start construction of the new two-lane bridge over Kahouri Stream, east of Stratford in 2023.

The new bridge will be built on a straighter alignment, providing safer journeys along State Highway 43.

The existing one lane bridge, constructed in 1908, will remain in place as a historic walking and cycling bridge once the new bridge is complete.

Further east on the route, we are planning to start enabling works to seal the remaining 10km section of road through the Tāngarākau Gorge in March next year.

We had planned to start this side of Christmas, but due to the high volume of works being done in the region, our contractors are not able to start until the new year.

To ensure our programme stays on schedule, we’re aiming to carry out all enabling works such as drainage and retaining wall works next year. Sealing of the entire 10km section will be completed in the 2023/24 construction season.

We’ll provide details of any traffic impacts caused by this work early in the new year.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable festive season.
