He Pānui

Kia ora koutou! Welcome to this edition of He Pānui - Te Māngai Pāho, keeping you up to date with the latest news in te reo Māori content and funding across Aotearoa!

News & Current Affairs Round

The purpose of this funding round is to support the creation of quality, Māori news and current affairs content for diverse audiences using free-to-air/access platforms. The content funded will need to contribute to the normalisation and wellbeing of te reo Māori.

News Service in te reo Māori
Funding is available for Māori news services in te reo Māori (100%). Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of both journalistic and te reo Māori capability. Proposals should contain a commitment to collaboration in the gathering and distribution of news; include strategies to reduce unnecessary duplication; articulate a focus on improving the quality of storytelling and delivery to appropriate platform(s) for its audience.

Current affairs
Funding is available for suitably experienced providers to produce current affairs programmes that deliver Māori-interest stories for diverse audiences. Te Māngai Pāho is particularly interested in programmes and providers that are future-focussed and can deliver high quality te reo Māori content for fluent audiences.

Applications are now open for the News & Current Affairs funding round. Read the RFP and apply now. Applications close on 12 September.

Reo Māori Content Co-fund

Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air are joining forces once again to fund high-quality, reo Māori screen content for a broad audience. The purpose of the co-fund is to support projects that either agency could not fund alone.

In this funding round we are looking to preference:

  1. Projects that qualify to access the NZSPR,
  2. Ambitious Scripted projects with scale
  3. Ambitious Non-Fiction projects with scale

Ambitious projects with scale suggest high production values, well-crafted scripts or well researched ideas, that will stand out in the media marketplace. They will have strong platform support, including promotional budgets that aspire to attract a large-scale local audience.

Applications are now open for the Reo Māori Content Co-Fund. Read the RFP and apply now. Applications close 12 September.

Mauriora!

Each year during Māhuru Māori and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori we are seeing more and more engagement with the te reo Māori. It’s inspiring! The challenge for us remains, how do we convert that annual burst of enthusiasm or support for te reo Māori into a year round commitment? That is an objective Te Māngai Pāho. Our content creators and platforms can perhaps collaborate in order to convert more of that annual enthusiasm into an enduring commitment to the growth of te reo Māori.

Te Māngai Pāho currently has two very significant funding rounds open. The Te Reo Māori Co-Fund round with NZ On Air and the News and Current Affairs Round. We are facing increased demand for our funding and so the competition for funding in these rounds will be tough. It is absolutely vital that in your proposals you present the best possible case for your content. Wherever possible you should provide data to support your case. And please ensure your completed proposals are submitted well ahead of the closing time.

Ko te reo te take!
