A bird's eye view of the damage at Mangahauini Gorge where work is ongoing to repair the road Highway highlightsMangahauini Gorge Work in the gorge is ongoing. We’ve had the green light to design additional improvements and are working with hapū on solutions to protect the highway from the Mangahauini River by stabilising slopes, repairing river and road edges, and upgrading culverts and drainage. We'll have more details next fortnight. |

One of two culverts recently completed at Mangatuna Culvert completion at Mangatuna Have a look at the extent of the Mangatuna Culvert reconstruction. It’s difficult to see from the road but from the air, it looks pretty impressive. This work will divert water from the road into surrounding channels, preventing surface flooding. Surface flooding can damage the road, causing potholes and erosion, and poses safety risks by reducing traction and increasing the likelihood of crashes. |

Emergency works have been completed at Whakawhitira (Kemp's Hill) Culvert Emergency works at Whakawhitira (Kemp's Hill) Culvert complete: More work ahead Cyclone Gabrielle damage to SH35 in the form of a hole in the road at Whakiwhitira (Kemp’s Hill) has been repaired. The hole was edging closer to the live lane and quick work has temporarily remedied this. TREC will return to this site over summer to reconstruct the culvert. |

Summer works programmeDid you know that most maintenance and recovery work happens in the warmer months (September to March) because of the better weather, longer daylight hours and safer, more efficient working conditions? Local contractors and TREC crews will be out in force over the warmer months. They'll be fixing damaged sections of road, stabilising areas to prevent slips, maintaining bridges and prepping to start on bigger projects such as replacing Hikuwai Bridge 1. At times parts of SH2 and SH35 will be reduced to one lane as needed, with stop/go traffic management in place. Work’s being scheduled to minimise delays, but with so much happening to make the roads better you’ll need to allow extra travel time. We’ll share more details of the summer works programme in future e-newsletters. |

Road notificationsWaikare Gorge SH2 at Waikare Gorge will be closed overnight on Monday 30 September and Tuesday 1 October, 9pm to 5am both nights. We need to close the bridge to replace the decking. The new decking will improve traction for vehicles travelling across the bridge. It’s vital we do ongoing maintenance on the Bailey bridge until we can build a permanent replacement for the bridge. There's no viable detour route during the closure. If you’re driving between Tairāwhiti and Hawke's Bay during the upcoming school holidays, please plan ahead for the closure. If bad weather delays the work, roadworkers will continue on Wednesday overnight into Thursday. Facebook link to notice. Rotokautuku Bridge The Rotokautuku Bridge in Ruatoria is undergoing repairs to replace the bearings beneath the bridge and strengthen the cross bracing, following the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle. This work requires a 30-minute road closure on Monday 23 September,12pm – 12.30pm while the bridge is lifted temporarily. See more information here. Connection and professional development: One of the three workshops TREC held with Tairāwhiti subcontractors Keeping it localTairāwhiti subcontractors took the time to participate in a series of workshops over three weeks focusing on quality assurance, procurement, and commercial matters such as claim variations and substantiation. It was a great opportunity to catch up with those who attended, share information and gather feedback, so we can continue to develop our work together. |

Did you know?Did you know drones are used often by our TREC teams to give us a bird’s eye view over landscapes and highways where we need to work? This extra information and data is valuable to help us design and build infrastructure suitable for the geology and landscape. You may spot our drones about 100 metres up flying over highways and adjacent land. The drones are large and can make some noise but are harmless. Our drone operators follow all required guidelines and legislation. If you have any concerns or questions let us know via info@trec.nz or 0800 80 TREC (0800 80 8732). |
