Proposed design

The engagement brochure outlining the proposed design for SH1 Wellington Improvements has been popular! It includes an overview of the proposed design with detailed descriptions, maps and images of each section of the project and is available online here or at the community information sessions.

Online survey

We're keen to hear your feedback on the proposed design via our online survey. Your feedback on how the project may benefit or impact you and your community will be taken into consideration as we continue to refine the design.

Feedback is open until: 11.59pm, Sunday 14 December 2025

Next step: We'll then share an initial summary of what we heard in February next year

Public information days

Our 6th and final information day before engagement closes is this Saturday 6 December from 2pm to 5pm at Mt Cook School gym, 160 Tory Street, Te Aro.

We’ve had a great turnout to the 5 community information days so far held on the Waterfront, Mt Victoria, Te Aro, Hataitai, and Kilbirnie with approximately 700 people coming to meet with our project team to ask questions, share their commuting experiences, and learn about the proposed design.

The 4-week community engagement period aims to understand the potential benefits and impacts of the proposed design for individuals and communities. The engagement brochure summarising the proposed design has been popular - available online here.

All our information day venues are wheelchair accessible. If you are planning to attend this Saturday and have any other accessibility needs you’d like us to be aware of, please email us at: SH1WgtnImprovements@nzta.govt.nz

On track in the Wellington Town Belt

Geotechnical investigations in the Hataitai Park section of the Wellington Town Belt for the second Mt Victoria Tunnel have been underway for just over 3 weeks.

This began with making improvements to some tracks to allow drill rig access, including widening some areas of track and applying a fresh basecourse to others. These track improvements will also benefit town belt users.

We’re drilling 5 boreholes to collect core samples from 4 geotechnical investigation locations to provide an understanding of the local subsurface conditions.

Some live stats:

  • The first borehole (pictured) is being drilled at an angle of 50°, has reached a depth of 53m below ground and has so far provided 70m of core samples. To reach our target depth of 75m, we still need to recover an additional 25m of core samples
  • The second borehole is being drilled straight down and has so far reached a depth of 35m. The target depth for this borehole is 80m

As anticipated, the rock has become less weathered and stronger with depth.
