Alert: koalas are on move

While koalas can be spotted on Redlands Coast any time of the year, the period from August to December sees an increase in koala movement across roads and through yards, as they venture to find a mate.

As part of Redland City Council’s koala safe neighbourhood program, ambassador koalas like Jazza and her joey (pictured) receive regular health checks.

Thelma, Rose, Kokomo, Bubble and Calypso (who are koala ambassadors living in Wellington Point and Birkdale) have also found love and are now raising joeys, poised to be the next generation of Redlands Coast's koala population.

How can we help koalas now and into the future?

It's crucial for residents to remain alert as koalas cross roads or through backyards. You can help local koalas with these simple actions:

  1. Slow down and keep an eye out when driving, particularly at night.
  2. Make your backyard koala friendly by planting trees and putting wildlife escapes on your fence and in your pool.
  3. Ensure your pets are safe and secure at night and when out walking.
  4. Keep your distance and let koalas move about freely if they are not in immediate danger.
  5. Call the Redlands 24-hour Wildlife Rescue Service immediately on (07) 3833 4031 if you notice a sick or injured koala.
  6. Submit all koala sightings to Redlands Coast Koala Watch here.

To learn more, visit the koala community web page.

Be aware of wildlife this bushfire season

Bushfires are on everyone's mind but wildlife can't prepare. When there's a bushfire near you, here are some tips to help our local furry, feathery and scaly friends:

  1. Put a container of water outside. Displaced wildlife are on the move and a water source will help them while they're searching for a safe place to rest. Add a few rocks to the container just in case smaller animals, like bees, fall in.
  2. Be wildlife aware. Observe wildlife while you are out and about. If you see an animal that's hurt, injured or appears in distress, contact the Redlands Wildlife Ambulance Service on (07) 3833 4031.
  3. Provide more habitat for wildlife. Start by adding native plants to your backyard. Our Native Nursery can help you get started.

For advice on getting you and your loved ones, pets and property bushfire ready, visit the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services website.

You can also head to Redlands Coast Disaster Dashboard to see active incidents and warnings, and sign up for Redlands Coast Alerts.

Thank you for helping keep our wildlife and community safe!
