SH58 Weekend Closure
8:00pm Friday 28 April - 4:00am Monday 1 May
May be postponed in case of wet weather
We are asking Wellingtonians to plan ahead for a closure of SH58 between SH1 and SH2 for a full weekend of project road works - Friday night to early Monday morning. Work is planned for the weekend beginning Friday 28 April, but may be postponed if wet weather is forecast.
Plan ahead for detours and heavier traffic on other State Highways
Traffic will be heavier than normal on SH1 and SH2 while SH58 is closed. Please avoid travel or use public transport where possible, or allow extra time.
What's happening?
Waka Kotahi project teams are coordinating road works on SH58 for one weekend of continuous shift work, depending on dry weather.
We will close SH58 Haywards Hill Road, between Mt Cecil Road and Moonshine Road for work on the current stage of the SH58 Safety Improvements project.
To make best use of the closure, the Transmission Gully project team will be working near the SH58 interchange, and Wellington Transport Alliance will use the closure to complete maintenance works.
Work will start at 8:00pm Friday and finish by 4:00am the following Monday. There will be staffed road closure points near the SH1 and SH2 interchanges, and at our work sites. Residents and emergency services will have access at all times.
Why are we closing the road?
We are reconstructing a section of the highway as part of the SH58 Safety Improvements project. This is to prepare the road surface before we add new median and side safety barriers.
Closing the road means we can get a lot more work done in a shorter space of time, compared with working under stop-go traffic management, over multiple nights and weekends.
Closing the road is also much safer for our people working on site, without the danger posed by traffic moving past while people work. We’re coordinating activity to ensure we get as much work done as possible while traffic is diverted.
