RESEARCH

Sewage Overflows Linked to Increase in Gastrointestinal Illnesses

A new study led by Beth Haley and Wendy Heiger-Bernays suggests the risk of people developing acute gastrointestinal illness is significantly higher in Massachusetts communities that border the Merrimack River, following extreme combined sewer overflows. This risk increased regardless of drinking water source, suggesting that exposure to sewage-associated pathogens may occur through other pathways such as recreation in the river.  Read more.

Airplane Noise Exposure May Increase Risk of Chronic Disease

A new study led by Junenette Peters found that people who were exposed to higher levels of noise from aircraft were more likely to have higher body mass index, an indicator for obesity that can lead to stroke or hypertension. The findings highlight how the environment—and environmental injustices—can shape health outcomes. Learn more.
