Reef Authority names new Chief Scientist

Following an extensive recruitment process, the Reef Authority is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Roger Beeden as Chief Scientist. Dr Beeden, who has held several senior management roles since he joined the Reef Authority in 2008 including positions in Climate Change, Reef Knowledge, Reef Interventions and Tourism and Stewardship, said the position was the culmination of more than two decades working to protect the Reef.

Reef in Focus episode 2: Catching a coral predator

Crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks have been one of the major causes of coral decline across the Great Barrier Reef over the past 40 years. We caught up with marine scientist Dr David Williamson, who heads up our Crown-of-thorns Starfish Control Program, to chat about these voracious Reef-dwellers in the latest Reef in Focus podcast.

Love is in the water

Bursting into a kaleidoscope of colour in the world’s biggest display of new life, there is no more important event for the future of the Reef than the spectacular coral spawning. During this synchronised mass reproduction, millions of bundles of coral sperm and eggs are released into the ocean to breed the next generation of corals – a positive sign for Reef renewal and regeneration.

Phil's vision for
co-managing the Reef

Mr Phil Rist is a Nywaigi Traditional Owner and CEO of Girringun Aboriginal Corporation. We spoke with Phil about his co-management journey, including when he first realised his Traditional Owner obligations to Country, those who he collaborated with and how he envisions the future management of the Great Barrier Reef.

Congratulations to Mrs Judith Stutchbury, one of our dedicated Reef Guardian School teachers from Kalkie State School, who was recently awarded the prestigious PM's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Primary Schools. Mrs Stutchbury facilitates meaningful experiences for her students to learn about the Reef and its ecosystems.
