Kia ora

Our crews been making steady progress on the final section of the upgrade works through Waikanae.

The bulk of our works are being carried out after hours to reduce impacts to road users, particularly during peak traffic times. Although this has helped, we acknowledge there have been some delays, particularly at the Te Moana Rd intersection. However, this section will be completed by the end of the month.

Alongside the major changes you’re seeing, we’re closing out some of the smaller tasks such as signage upgrades, vegetation clearing and final line marking.  This may extend into the New Year, but the effects on traffic flow will not be as noticeable.

Thank you for continuing to treat our work site and crews with respect.  We look forward to the community having full access to the upgraded road and environs soon.

Works in Waikanae

Asphalt crews continue their night-time resurfacing works from Waikanae Bridge to New World Waikanae. There may be some detours or stop/go traffic management in place during this time. These works should be completed in the next two weeks, however timing is dependent on weather.

The upgrade to the Elizabeth Street intersection has been delayed. This is because we’re waiting for a Kiwirail permit to enter their corridor so we can install the final cable enabling the traffic light poles at the intersection to be relocated. Once it has been installed, we can construct the remaining sections of kerb and channel at the intersection, followed by the final section of footpath.

Upon completion of the Elizabeth St intersection, we’ll move on to installing new signals at the Ngaio Rd intersection.

Sealing works north of Otaihanga roundabout

The Wellington Transport Alliance recently completed its maintenance tasks in the area – separate to our revocation works – which means we can get a team working to seal the section of road between Otaihanga roundabout and Waikanae Bridge.

An initial texture coat will be applied in late November (weather dependent) followed by a second binder coat in February/March.

This work will have an effect on traffic, but lane closures won’t be needed – there will be a temporary reduced speed limit in the area instead, but this will be less disruptive.

Waikanae Bridge pedestrian/cycleway

Unfortunately, installation of the bridge structure that will form the new pathway for pedestrians/cyclists over Waikanae River has been further delayed.

This is due to a holdup in the shipment of truss parts for the new bridge from Australia. However, we’ve now had confirmation that the shipment is scheduled to arrive on 6 December. We’re waiting on our contractor to confirm if they can assemble the trusses pre-Christmas.

Between 10 January and early February, we'll be:
• putting up the safety barrier
• attaching the retaining structures that support the pathway
• installing the pathway structure
• clearing the site.

This means the 24/7 lane closures, originally scheduled for late November, will now take place during the above timeframe to allow us to carry out those works.

Have your say on speed limits

As part of the Road to Zero programme, we’re consulting on new speed limits on SH1 as part of a nationwide Interim State Highway Speed Management Plan (ISMP). This plan is being developed under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2022. Managing speeds through the ISMP is part of delivering Road to Zero which aims to achieve zero deaths and serious injuries from crashes on New Zealand roads.

The ISMP includes setting appropriate speed limits for sections of the old SH1 that runs through Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikanae. It also includes targeted speed limit changes on other state highways in the region.

You can find out more about these changes and the consultation process at www.nzta.govt.nz/ISMP. Consultation runs until 12 December 2022.
