Connecting Auckland’s North Shore to the city centre for walking and cycling
Kia ora,
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has been working to progress a seamless walking and cycling connection between the city and the North Shore.
The Auckland Harbour Bridge section will start in Westhaven before crossing the Waitemata Harbour and then connect to the SeaPath section which extends to Takapuna. This enduring link will provide choice for how Aucklanders on both sides of the harbour get to work,
connect with family and friends and access services.
Auckland Harbour Bridge (AHB) Shared Path feedback summary online now
Thanks very much to all those who provided feedback in August and September around the ramp/lift options for both the southernand northern connections of the AHB Shared Path. We received an overwhelming response from the community that ramps are preferred for accessibility as well as more broadly how important a seamless connection is for people using the link and also the community.
You can find the full summary of the feedback received and our response to this on our website here.
Geotechnical Investigations
Geotechnical investigations have started on both the southern and northern sides of the harbour to enable our team to further progress design work for the walking and cycling link.
You can find our frequently asked questions about geotechnical investigations on our website here.
Procurement
We have begun procurement for a detailed design and construction partner for the alliance that will deliver the AHB Shared Path section of the connection. Seeking early contractor involvement will allow us to move forward with this project as quickly as possible as the design can be further developed alongside the construction team that will build this connection across the harbour. An announcement on the preferred alliance team will be made in mid-2020.
Timeframe Update
The AHB Shared Path detailed business case is nearly complete and will be going to the Transport Agency Board for endorsement at the end of the year. Both projects are moving forward together into the design and consenting phase.
Construction funding approval is being sought for all work by the end ofthe year, with the earliest possible timeframe for the start of early works construction in late 2020.
