Montague's annual Club Championship event took place this past weekend and eight players emerged with Club Championship titles following a tense 36-hole battle in five different flights. Thanks to the 68 people who played in the event, which is double the turnout we had a year ago!

Club Championship Recap

Montague has a new men's Club Champion! Congratulations to Dalton Rose, who holed out for eagle on the 15th hole late in the final round and rode that momentum to a one-stroke victory and his first Montague Club Championship. Also a big congratulations to Dana Cole-Levesque, who cruised to his sixth straight senior Club Championship, and to Karen Johnson for her second-straight women's Club Championship.

Dalton Rose shot a 77 in the first round, good for fourth place after day one in the Men's Championship flight. Brad Young led the pack after Saturday with a 74. Defending champion Ross Evans and five-time champion Ben Lacaillade were two shots back after each shooting 76.

Rose, playing in the next-to-last group on Sunday, shot an opening-nine 40. He got back on track with a birdie on the 11th hole, nearly holing out a short pitch shot for eagle. After a pair of bogeys on 12 and 13, Rose survived a wild drive on 14, making par.

A perfect drive on 15 left him 135 yards for his second shot, uphill and playing into the wind on Sunday. Rose went with 9 iron, the ball pitched a few feet behind the hole and spun back into the cup for an unlikely eagle to skyrocket him up the leaderboard.

Rose then got up-and-down from long and left on 16 for par, made par on 17, and survived a bogey on 18 to finish with 76. Rose's back nine of 36 (even par) was four shots better than anyone else in the top-6 of the final leaderboard, which proved decisive in his comeback win.

Rose finished with a two-day total of 153, one stroke ahead of Evans, two ahead of Lacaillade, three ahead of Bill Wilkinson, and five ahead of Young in what turned out to be one of the tightest and deepest men's Championship flight fields in several years.

The event's other big drama came in the Men's B Flight gross competition where David Narkewicz and Curtis Barry battled back and forth all day in the final group. Tied after regulation, extra holes were needed and Narkewicz clinched the title in a sudden death playoff.

Both players struggled on the front nine on Sunday, with Narkewicz shooting 41, and Barry 43, as Narkewicz extended his first round lead.

Barry pulled even for the first time on the tough par-4 13th, playing into the wind on Sunday, when Narkewicz made an 8 to Barry's 5. Narkewicz answered immediately on the 14th, firing a second shot on the par-5 with a 5-wood to 15 feet before draining the putt for eagle to regain the lead.

Barry didn't go quietly, answering right back by making a tough downhill birdie putt on the 15th to get back within one stroke. Both players made great par saves on the 16th hole, before a Narkewicz bogey on 17 knotted things up again. After a pair of pars on the 18th, Narkewicz and Barry headed for a sudden death playoff, starting on the first hole.

Narkewicz provided the final flourish on the playoff hole, hitting a wedge second shot to two feet. Barry's would-be tying birdie putt from 15 feet just missed and Narkewicz converted the little tester for birdie to secure the victory.

Narkewicz (77-82) and Barry (79-80) tied overall with 159 in regulation. Ben O'Brien fired a final round 75, the best round of the event in B Flight, and tied with Ben Ashford in third place, four strokes behind Narkewicz and Barry.

Dana Cole-Levesque's dynastic run in the Senior flight continued this year as he shot 70-74 to cruise to an eight-stroke victory, his sixth straight in this event. Cole-Levesque's first-round of 70, the lowest gross round by anyone in the entire event, featured 15 pars. Ted Rogers and Gus Meyer, a pair of former Montague men's Club Champions, finished tied for second at 152 overall.

Karen Johnson won her second straight Women's Club Championship, shooting a pair of 81s for a two-day total of 162. Nine-time Club Champion Angela Hildenbrand finished in second, seven shots back with 169.

Mariner Gershon earned the Junior Club Championship title, shooting an 83 that featured a birdie on the 14th hole and a good back nine of 42. Defending champion Colton Sault finished two shots back with 85.

Montague also crowned a trio of Net Club Champions. Chris Dayton shot net rounds of 65-70 to earn the Men's B Flight Net championship. Donna Becker had net rounds of 71-64 to earn the Women's Net title. Phil Neff put together a solid event with a pair of net 70s to earn the Senior Net title.

Updates From Our Superintendent

Superintendent Peter Koval and crew have have a busy stretch upcoming. First up on the docket is greens aeration, which will happen this coming Monday through Wednesday to kick off September.

We're looking for volunteers to assist with the greens aeration project on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday next week. Anyone who can help will be treated to lunch and beers on the Club. If interested in volunteering, please reach out to Peter Koval at 802-793-1923.

The crew has also been aerating rough and fairways, followed by overseeding each, a project while will continue in the coming weeks.

Last week also presented a challenge as the pump station was down for five days, meaning no irrigation was happening. This issue was resolved on Thursday and everything is back up and running.

We're also looking for both full and part time help on the grounds crew for the duration of the season. If interested, please reach out to Koval at the number above.

"With school starting up, we have to change up daily mowing routines based on staff levels. So, areas which we mowed multiple times weekly may only be done once or twice a week. We are doing the best we can and will still work to provide a great experience for everyone playing the course," Koval said.

2026 Men's League Update

Only one week of men's league left for this season, position round this week to settle the final team standings. Congrats to Alan Lamell for his great round of 38, 2-over par, on the back nine last week to lead Tuesday night B flight. It appears the Carrier Roasting Company team has all but secured the team title, with a 10.5 point lead with just the final week of play left.

The BS'ers (Sandy Bingham and Brenda Badger) are racing up the team standings, emerging from the pack to claim second place in the season-long points race. The ladies have two weeks of regular league left, followed by the end of the season banquet on Sept. 10. Is there enough time for the BS'ers to complete the comeback and claim the top spot?

VSWGA Update

The Montague ladies had another good week of play in state days. MK Oakley (third, gross), Brenda Badger (second, net), and Penny Maxfield (third, net) all had point-scoring finishes at Quechee Highland. Montague is looking good to hopefully re-take the Mae Murray Jones Trophy!

Sunday Morning Group

Montague's Sunday Morning Group is back in action this coming Sunday, August 30.

The Sunday Morning Group starts play at 8 a.m. each Sunday through the end of the season. If interested in playing, please arrive at the club by 7:30 a.m. on Sunday to register for the 8:00 start for the group. You can also register by calling the club (802-728-3806) prior to 7:30. If you do not arrive, or call, by 7:30, you are NOT guaranteed a spot to play.

This is a member-run weekly game with a $20 cash entry fee. Different teams are picked each week and the entry fee covers a team-based Nassau (front/back/overall) game, as well as individual gross skins.

Upcoming Events

Nine and Dine: every Thursday at 5:30.

This event features teams of four playing a nine-hole scramble with a 5:30 shotgun start. The entry fee is $20 per person for members, $35 per person for guests, and this includes golf, carts, and dinner. Please call, or visit, the clubhouse to register...this event is limited to 10 teams and spots fill VERY quickly!

Bethel Rotary: September 26
