How splendid it has been to return from my sabbatical leave to herald the start of a new academic year. This is a year in which we mark the fortieth anniversary of the matriculation of women as undergraduates. 'Forty Years On - Women of Corpus' is a year of activities and events aimed at encouraging us to think about that transformation (and the two thousand women since), as well as the challenges ahead. In October 1983, we welcomed the first cohort of female undergraduates to the College and we are delighted to host a year-long programme of events to mark this 40th anniversary. We look forward to cataloguing the activities throughout the year. On 8 and 9 March we will host a Women of Corpus Weekend to coincide with International Women’s Day. On 22 June, we will hold a Garden Party at Leckhampton. Through all our activities we aim to engage everyone across our community — students, staff, alumni and the Fellowship. Female-focussed events will include special student society guests, female musicians, and women preachers in Chapel. Throughout the year we seek to raise the profile of our first benefactress in 1349 by fundraising for a bursary in her name, the Margaret Andrew Bursary, to support a female Bridging Programme student. Student NewsMatriculation On Sunday 1 October, we welcomed 83 undergraduate and 72 postgraduate students for the matriculation ceremony of the undergraduates and the traditional matriculation photos for both cohorts. It is always such a wonderful sight to see all the smiling faces and proud family members as the Freshers embark on their Corpus journey. Widening Participation The summer break saw College come alive with Year 12 students from across the country enjoying a taste of life here at Corpus. We welcomed students for residential stays from our link schools in Northern Ireland and from our super-curricular initiatives the Pelican Programme and STEM SMART. Our Open Days were also extremely popular and we once again played host to undergraduates who enrolled on the Experience Postgrad Life Sciences programme. In the month before term started, we welcomed our fourth cohort of Bridging Course students, who spent three weeks in College acclimatising themselves with Cambridge life and studies. These students from under-represented backgrounds enjoyed a tailored and individualised programme of study, allowing them to consolidate core academic skills and become familiar with the Cambridge supervision system. Strengthening outreach in the North East In September, we were delighted to appoint Elaine Effard to the new role of Access and Outreach Coordinator in the North East. Elaine is based at Harton Academy, South Shields, and will support teachers and high-achieving pupils in local schools, providing advice and assistance about the application process to competitive Universities like Cambridge. Elaine has first-hand experience of this, having grown up in the area herself and - against all the odds - gone on to study at the University of Oxford. Along with reconnecting with old friends, guests enjoyed an exhibition in the Parker Library on Forty Years of Women at Corpus, along with an insightful talk from Custodian of the Corpus Chronophage Clock, Professor Ewan St. John Smith. More photos To honour the generosity of alumnus and donor Charles Allen, whose support of the Cambridge Australia Scholarships has funded over 20 postgraduate students at Corpus and 48 in total across the University of Cambridge, his son Malcolm Allen - also an alumnus - recently planted an oak tree at Leckhampton. More photos In September, we celebrated 15 years of the Taylor Library and the Corpus Chronophage. We were delighted to welcome Dr John C Taylor OBE, benefactor and designer of the now famous clock, and others whose benefaction contributed to the library, along with the architects Wright & Wright and Stewart Huxley from the engineering firm Huxley Bertram, who constructed the clock. Hundreds of people came to the Parker Library for an Open Cambridge event on 9 September. Visitors got to learn about how many of the Library's priceless manuscripts are maintained and restored. They also enjoyed a display detailing the 40th anniversary of female undergraduates at Corpus and a recent Oral History project about that time. Thanks to the diligent research of Peter Martland (m1982), seven missing names have been discovered and carved into the Corpus war memorial. Peter made the discovery whilst researching for his forthcoming book Lost Generations: the lives of those members of the College of Corpus Christi and of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cambridge who died undertaking military service during the First World War, 1914 to 1919. Peter will speak following the Act of Remembrance at Chapel on Saturday 11 November. The service starts at 10.50.
