In accordance with NFHS rules, the official score was recorded as 2–0. Teams must start with five players, although they are not required to finish with five players if injuries or fouls reduce their roster during the game. Despite the forfeit, both teams played an exhibition scrimmage afterward so the players could still enjoy the experience of competition. Special thanks to Precise HVAC for generously providing players so the scrimmage could take place. 🏀 Exhibition UpdatesThe WHGBL continues to expand opportunities for our players through competitive exhibitions with other leagues. Last Sunday, the 7th/8th grade Cromwell Girls Recreational Basketball League faced the WHGBL Revolution Seniors Division team in a thrilling contest. Both teams battled back and forth throughout the game, but in the end Revolution prevailed 46–41. On Tuesday, February 17, a WHGBL combined Juniors Division team consisting of players from Villanova, Siena, and St. John’s traveled to East Hartford Middle School to face the East Hartford Girls Recreational Basketball League (5th/6th grade) team. The WHGBL squad played outstanding defense and secured a 13–4 victory. Today’s Special EventTwo WHGBL Minors Division teams — the Bears and the Bulldogs — will participate in a halftime scrimmage during the Women’s basketball game at Central Connecticut State University on the varsity court at 1:00 PM. This is an exciting opportunity for our youngest players to experience playing on a collegiate court. Tomorrow’s ExhibitionTomorrow at 3:00 PM at Sedgwick Middle School, the WHGBL Dumont Law Seniors Division team will face the Cromwell Girls Recreational League 7th/8th grade team in another exciting exhibition matchup. 🏀 February Frenzy Tournament UpdateThe WHGBL proudly sent two all-star teams to compete in the February Frenzy Double Elimination Tournament hosted by Corpus Christi School over the President's Day holiday weekend. The league fielded: • A Junior Varsity team (5th/6th graders) Junior Varsity ResultsThe WHGBL JV All-Star Team opened the tournament against the host school and fell 40–8. The team rebounded strongly in their second game with a 20–12 victory over St. Rita Middle School of Hamden. Their tournament run concluded with a competitive 21–11 loss to John Paul II Middle School. Varsity ResultsThe Varsity All-Star Team began the tournament impressively with a 24–14 victory over St. John Paul II Middle School of Middletown. They then faced the host team and lost 32–11, but rallied to reach the semifinal round. In one of the most dramatic games of the tournament, the WHGBL team lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer, 19–18, to the Wethersfield Travel Team. We are fundamentally a teaching league. Our mission is to teach leadership core values such as, teamwork, resilience, and confidence through the fundamentals of basketball. The league believes in providing opportunity — this does not always translate to equality of outcomes. Over the past 40 years of league history, some teams have performed exceptionally well while others are in developmental stages. While the league works hard to maintain parity, player growth and development remain far more important than final scores or standings. Winning with humility and maintaining confidence during challenging games are life lessons that extend far beyond the basketball court. Last season, the league voted to change teams annually in the Juniors and Seniors Divisions so players gain the opportunity to learn from different teammates and coaches. 👥 Board Expansion OpportunitiesThe WHGBL continues to grow, and we are actively seeking volunteers to expand our board. We are currently looking to fill the following roles: • Assistant Secretary If you are interested in helping the league continue to thrive, please contact the league President about joining the WHGBL Board. 🍞 West Hartford Food Pantry Drive – Tomorrow! On Sunday, February 22, all West Hartford basketball leagues will unite in support of the West Hartford Food Pantry. Collection boxes will be located at Conard High School and Sedgwick Middle School during league games. Families are encouraged to: • Bring non-perishable food items For additional details, please contact Danielle Weiss or review the flyer at the bottom of this newsletter. Together, the West Hartford basketball community can make a meaningful difference for families in need. 🏆 Skills Competition Day – March 7The WHGBL Skills Competition Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 7 at Conard High School, immediately following the Seniors Division semifinal playoff games. The event is expected to run approximately 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM. Minors and Juniors Division Events• Kick the Cones Seniors Division Events• 3-on-3 Tournament Trophies or medals will be awarded to winners and runners-up. Important: No exceptions. Important NoteThere is a possibility the Skills Competition may need to be cancelled this year if the high school teams require the gym for practice in preparation for conference and state tournaments. The practices would follow WHGBL playoff games in the afternoon. The league will communicate with families once the situation becomes clearer. 🏀COACHES’ CORNERSeniors DivisionWith the playoffs approaching, defense will determine success. Teams capable of executing: • a disciplined full-court press will dramatically increase their chances of advancing in the postseason. In a competitive playoff environment, defensive execution can mean the difference between a comfortable win and a surprising upset. Juniors DivisionLeague officials continue to report significant improvement in player fundamentals, which is a credit to the hard work of both players and coaches. Coaches should continue emphasizing: • Proper inbound positioning (avoiding crossing the baseline and/or sideline) These fundamentals will serve players well as they continue developing their basketball IQ. ⚖️RULES REMINDERFree Throw ReboundingThe league continues to see confusion regarding when players may legally enter the lane during free throws. Key points: • Players on the block may enter the
paint as soon as the ball leaves the free throw shooter’s hand. Officials frequently observe players on the blocks waiting for the ball to hit the rim, which causes them to lose valuable rebounding position. Coaches are encouraged to teach players on the blocks to react immediately once the shooter releases the ball. 🌟SPONSOR’S SPOTLIGHTCommon Good Home BuyersThis week we proudly recognize Common Good Home Buyers for their support of the West Hartford Girls Basketball League.
