Your update from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency

Welcome to the project update for the three Waka Kotahi intersection improvement projects in Northland being delivered as part of the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme. This newsletter provides regular news and information about the projects.

These projects address key challenges for our regional state highway network, including safety risks, resilience and congestion problems, accessibility and travel time reliability. The projects also support regional economic development.

SH11 retaining wall and stormwater drainage at the new Puketona roundabout, January 2021

New additions to Puketona Junction

We are currently constructing the SH11 leg of the intersection which involves rebuilding old road to meet new roading at the roundabout. This section of road will be covered with loose metal at times and the lane layout will shift regularly as layers of metal are laid, compacted and stabilised. Sealing the new road and applying fresh line markings is planned for late March.

We are also pouring concrete for traffic islands at the roundabout. We ask road users to be mindful of our crew and to take extra care travelling through these works.

Drainage work continues across the entire site, including a pipe and retaining wall structure (pictured above) to assist drainage under the highway. We are also working on the western side of SH10 where swales (drains) are being dug and the area is being prepared for the reinstatement of grass verges.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

Backfilling the retaining wall at Kawakawa, January 2021

Busy times at Kawakawa roundabout

The Kawakawa intersection at SH1 and SH11 has seen a lot of activity this month as the project nears completion. We have been backfilling the new retaining wall, fencing the top of the hill above the intersection and bringing the road surface up to its final height and finish.

Wooden panels in the retaining wall now define the base of the hillside and the first test panel of a series of carved concrete panels will be delivered shortly. These will become part of the completed wall. A draft landscape design has been delivered aimed at transforming the entrance to Kawakawa township into a showcase for native planting.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

SH12 and Rawene Road will be seeing safety improvements soon

Rawene intersection works to begin shortly

The intersection of SH12 and Rawene Road will see work beginning on safety improvements along the state highway in the next few weeks.

An improved road shoulder and new sections of safety barrier are elements of our safe system approach aimed at reducing the risk of people dying or being seriously injured at state highway intersections.
