Work to reinstate the road to two lanes at Pohokura starts this week

This week we’ll start building a new bridge over the damaged culvert at Pohokura to reinstate the road to two lanes.

The project is expected to take approximately 12 weeks to complete and pirority give way traffic control will be in place throughout the duration of the works. We won’t need to close the road at any time during the works so disruption to traffic will be minimal.

Motorists are asked to please take extra care while travelling through the site and stick to the temporary speed limits.

Once the new bridge is built, the temporary Bailey bridge currently in place will be removed.

Community drop-in in Whangamomona last month

Members of the project team were in Whangamomona last month to speak with locals about the improvements planned for the Forgotten World Highway.

There was a great turnout and we received some useful comments and feedback from the community. Thanks to everyone that came along.

Speeds through the gorge

Our plans to seal the road through the Tangarakau Gorge are progressing well, and work is scheduled to get underway soon.

We want to make sure that the speed is safe and right for this road, so we’re reviewing the current speed limit.

When the speed is safe and appropriate for the road, simple mistakes don’t need to end in tragedy.

Currently, the unsealed road through the gorge means motorists generally travel slower than the 100km/h speed limit. When the road is sealed, motorists may travel faster which could cause safety issues due to the sharp curves and roadside hazards.

To help ensure everyone has a safe journey through the gorge, we are reviewing the current speed limit as part of the sealing project.

We are keen to hear what you think about the current speed through the Tangarakau Gorge and if there is anything we need to consider while we look at the speed limit. Please email fwh@nzta.govt.nz and let us know your thoughts.
