Green Living in Casey April 2024

Loads to celebrate this World Environment Day in Casey

This year’s World Environment Day comes exactly two months before countries meet again to continue negotiating a global treaty to end plastic pollution.

In 2024 alone, humanity generated an estimated 400 million tonnes of plastic waste. The ongoing plastic pollution crisis can seem overwhelming.

BUT if you want to make a difference right here, there's a very simple message you can share. Plastic bags - even 'biodegradable' or 'compostable' ones - are the most common recycling contaminants in Casey.

Keeping soft plastics confined to the general waste bin is one of the simplest and most valuable things you can do.

If you're a small or medium-sized business in Casey, there are additional opportunities to tackle plastic waste. PLEASE express your interest in the 2025 Trim Your Bin project.

If you want to find out in person what we're doing in innovation, sustainability, and the future of our city, join us at Innovate Casey - Thursday 12 June, 5.00 pm - 8.30 pm. Get together with like-minded folks at a variety of presentations, panels, and networking opportunities.

Raising rarity

Meet some of the students working with The Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne @royalbotanicgardensvic, in collaboration with two City of Casey primary schools, to cultivate the endangered native Swamp Everlasting plant (Xerochrysum palustre).

These Grade 5/6 STEM Group students from Botanic Ridge Primary School are growing and monitoring the plants.

They're also collecting seeds, which will then be deposited into the Victorian Conservation Seed Bank for future restoration. The program integrates STEM learning and raises awareness about biodiversity and conservation.

If you’d like to learn more about this ⬆️ project, and our other Climate Action Living Lab partner projects, this is your sign to 👉 register for ‘Innovate Casey’ on Thursday 12 June!  Learn more about Raising Rarity and the rest of our Climate Action Living Lab projects.
