Petone to Melling works update

Work is continuing on different parts of the Petone to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua. We are currently working near Petone Station, where a new park and ride area is under construction, and in the area around Pharazyn Street and Bridge Street.

We are also getting ready to complete construction of the project's northern rail underpass, near Normandale Bridge, at Easter. There will be buses replacing some train services on the Melling Line - please check metlink.org.nz for details.

Northern Underpass & Shared Path

We're working in the area around Parliament Street, Pharazyn Street and Bridge Street at the moment. This work includes constructing the new shared path beneath the Normandale Bridge, and across the Greenaway reserve. 

At Easter we will complete the underpass beneath the rail near Parliament Street. We completed work to prepare for this at Christmas. Building the underpass (and restoring the rail above) will take five days, working day and night, from the evening of Thursday 9 April through to Tuesday 14 April.

There are no scheduled train services on the Melling line during Easter, and buses will replace trains on Tuesday 14 April, while the underpass is built and the track is reconnected. More information on bus replacements will be published on the Metlink website.

To complete this work, we need to close the road on Parliament Street. Vehicle access for residents will be maintained, otherwise please follow the detour on Laery Street and Herbert Street. 

We know that this type of work can be disruptive, especially during holidays and weekends. Thank you for your patience. 

Petone Station Park & Ride

To make space for a new shared path through the station area as part of the Petone to Melling route, we need to remove some parking spaces from the existing parking area closest to the station platforms.We’ll also need to change the layout of that parking area.

To replace the spaces that will be lost, we’ve started building a new park and ride area on the other side of the McKenzie Avenue overbridge. This will be completed and opened before we make any changes to the existing parking area.

The new parking area replaces all the spaces that will be lost from the existing park and ride and adds 30 new spaces – meaning more spaces in total when our work is finished.

Underpass Ready to Go

If you drive on SH2 or take the train through Petone, you may have seen our pre-cast concrete underpass sections stored near Petone Station. At Easter, these pieces will be installed beneath the rail near Parliament Street in Melling.
