See below to learn about more ways you can get involved with the Second-Year Experience (SYE) Program, Year of Data, and the Take Your Professor to Lunch Program. Thanks! NSOAI Staff Second-Year Experience (SYE) ProgramSYE programs are designed to meet the specific needs of second-year students. As a second-year student, you may be thinking about career development, academic opportunities, and on- and off-campus living. Do you have any other recommendations for programming? If so, there are three ways to get involved! Year of Data Grants (2019-2020)The Provost’s theme year encourages students, faculty, staff, departments, and centers to create programming that relates to the topic in many contexts: the sciences, the humanities, social culture and policy, the arts, etc. To further this goal, the Provost’s Office sponsors the Year of Data Grants Program to offer opportunities to create, participate in, and learn about data and related fields. Penn faculty, students, and staff can apply, either individually or in groups. There will be some additional funding available for special projects, including conferences and speakers that are co-sponsored by multiple Penn Schools or Centers. Examples from previous years include a presentation by Will Shortz (NY Times Crossword Puzzle Editor) celebrating the Year of Games and a day-long conference at the Penn Museum on Water and Ancient Civilizations commemorating the Year of Water. Take Your Professor, Mentor, TA to Lunch/DinnerDuring the academic year, there are four program options (2 initiated by students & 2 initiated by Professors/Mentors/TAs): Initiated by Students: Penn students can invite current or past professors, teaching assistants, advisors, as well as staff members who serve as mentors, to a free lunch at the University Club (3611 Walnut Street, 2nd floor of the Inn at Penn), Monday through Friday, 11:30am-1:30pm. Professors/mentors can also encourage their students to create a reservation. Students and professors, mentors, advisors, teaching assistants can eat a free lunch or dinner together in one of Penn's Residential Dining facilities: 1920 Commons, Hill College House, King’s Court English House, Lauder College House, or Falk Kosher Dining Cafe in Hillel. Initiated by Professors/Mentors/TAs: (Let them know about the program!): A professor/mentor/advisor/teaching assistant can host a class (or group of mentees) for lunch or dinner, twice per term, at one of Penn's Residential Dining facilities: 1920 Commons, Hill, King’s Court English College House, Lauder College House, or Falk Kosher Dining Cafe in Hillel A faculty member or teaching assistant can host a class to eat in their home and be reimbursed per student.
