Sealing the new motorway

Today, we start sealing the bulk of the new motorway - exciting!

The crew will start at the southern (Cranford Basin) end of the project and move north.
The first stage of sealing is called foam bitumen stabilisation. This is a process that mixes roading aggregate with hot bitumen, water and cement to create a strong but flexible surface. The work is done using a train made up of a bitumen tanker, a milling machine and a water cart. Once in action this train can do about 300m a day. The second stage of this process is chip sealing. In between the foaming and chip sealing, the surface needs to harden for at least one or two days.

To win back time lost during the Covid-19 lock down and to take advantage of any good weather we will be working longer hours when possible - between 6am and 12am. But as the crew move pretty fast, we won’t be in one place for more than a few days. Nearby residents will hear the noise from the machinery and may notice ground vibrations from the graders and compactors.

The third and final stage of sealing the road is laying the quieter asphalt surface, but this needs to wait until the chip seal has been down for one year.

All going well the CNC will be ready to open in mid-December this year.

Tram Road asphalting at night, on & off-ramps closed

Nightly from Sunday 11 October for a week, we are beginning our sealing work around Tram Road and the Tram Road on-ramp.

Tram Road will be reduced to one lane and both Tram Road and the Main North Road/Tram Road corner will be controlled with a Stop/Go set-up.

The Tram Road On-ramp will be open on Sunday night but will be closed at night from Monday to Thursday.

The right turn at the top of the Tram Road Off-ramp will also be closed over night for this work.

We will start setting up for this work at 7pm and should be off the road by 5am each morning.

Please obey the signs, drive carefully and expect some delays.
