February 2023

I hope that you, like me, have taken the time for a relaxing summer holiday and are now feeling ready to get into what promises to be a busy and exciting year!

Starting off next week we have the Burt Munro Challenge returning to Southland. Like many events it was cancelled last year due to Covid, so we are delighted to welcome back competitors and spectators for this signature Southland event. I look forward to hearing the 'vroom' of bikes in the City and around the region as we encourage visitors to travel beyond Invercargill.

Great South is in full swing. We have now received the Letter of Expectation from our shareholders outlining what they would like us to concentrate on for the 2023/24 financial year, and are busy preparing our Statement of Intent in response to this letter. As well, the Beyond 2025 Southland Long-term Plan that we are delivering on behalf of the region is shaping up nicely.

Last week New Zealand swore in our 41st Prime Minister, Rt Hon Chris Hipkins. The team here at Great South wish him all the very best in his new role.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with anyone who has family and friends grappling with the torrential rain and flooding in the north. It's difficult to comprehend when Southland has been basking in the sun and heat for so long now. Can we bottle it?

I do hope you enjoy this long weekend. You can find some ideas for enjoying local events, adventures and fun to be had at southlandnz.com and hopefully this fine weather lasts 'til then!

Ngā mihi,

Chami Abeysinghe
Chief Executive
