3,2,1...lift

With two 250 tonne cranes and ten people on site overseeing the operation, we’ve captured the moment the last of the three 28 tonne arch pieces was lifted into place. Spanning 11 metres high, the arch of the replacement bridge is an impressive new feature in the landscape.

Meet the team

George Couttie, Health & Safety Advisor

What is your role and responsibility in this project?
My job is to ensure we have the correct equipment and safety procedures in place so that everyone who comes onto site, goes home safely each day. I also look after the health and wellbeing of all our people through a variety of initiatives to giving them the tools, advice and support so they can take good care of their wellbeing and mental health when at work and at home.

What do you enjoy about working on this project?
We have an energetic and resourceful team and the solutions they’re able to develop to solve engineering or building challenges amazes me.

What is the outcome you’d like to see at the end of construction?
This bridge will be a beautiful asset which will be a benefit to the surrounding communities and visitors for many years to come and it’s great to be able to have played a role in this project.

Inspiration from all around

The new bridge has been designed to reflect the landscape in which it sits and tell the history and stories of the area.

The harbour is the design inspiration for the benches which will feature along the bridge deck, with specks of shell showing through the concrete, giving a coastal flavour to them.

With a variety of people and groups who will enjoy the bridge, there will be three different seat designs. Shorter benches are perfect for solo trips while there’ll be longer ones for small groups or whānau who are making a trip together.
