SH2/Moonshine Hill Road safety improvements completed
We’ve now completed construction of the safety improvements at the State Highway 2/Moonshine Hill Road intersection. This included the installation of new traffic lights to make turning safer. These traffic lights will go live on Monday 1 December.
Alongside those safety improvements we also undertook a speed limit consultation for the section of SH2 from just south of Moonshine Hill Road to just north of Whakatiki Street, where we proposed a lower speed limit of 80km/h. Following the review of the feedback we received from that consultation, alongside technical and safety assessments, the Director of Land Transport has approved the proposed new speed limit for this section. This new speed limit will also be operational from 1 December.
Over the past five years there have been an average of 13 crashes on this section of road each year. One of those crashes was fatal, with five others resulting in serious injuries. These safety improvements will make this high-risk section of SH2 safer for all road users by reducing the likelihood and severity of crashes.
