Bulls to Sanson update
Detailed design is now underway for a three-armed roundabout at the turn-off to RNZAF Air Force Base at Ōhakea (the Pukenui Road intersection at State Highway 3 between Bulls and Sanson).
Pukenui Road is the main service road to the Royal NZ Air Force Ōhakea air base, with Air Force personnel using this road to commute to and from Bulls, Sanson and Palmerston North.
Waka Kotahi is committed to Vision Zero, where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads, and a rural roundabout will help reduce deaths and injuries on this stretch of road.
A roundabout will also support turning movements associated with the planned new weigh station. The new weigh station is also in detailed design phase and will also help to make the road safer, by reducing the number of overweight trucks.
Design is also underway for the shared user path from Ōhakea to Bulls.
Groundworks next week
From 7-9 March we are undertaking groundworks around the Pukenui Road intersection to help us better understand the pavement and ground in the area and locate utilities.
Investigations will be done in multiple areas around the SH1/SH3 intersection and along Pukenui Road – both in the road and in the grass area next to the road. The works will be carried out for three nights between 9pm – 6am and there will be traffic management in place. If you are travelling on this road during these times, please take care.
