Click here ![]() The Great South Update July 2022 It’s all about our future this month at Great south.The latest Infometrics economic report for Southland released this week is looking very positive indeed. It’s no surprise given the array of exciting projects on the cusp for the region, from exciting Invercargill City Centre developments to new emerging large scale projects. There's a lot to celebrate. We are also pleased to be able to share with you our Statement of Intent. This is an important document that includes our areas of focus for the next three years, which has had input from our shareholders. This month we look forward to hosting thousands of children and their families at ILT Kidzone. What a blast that event is. If you haven’t been, we highly recommend it as a great family event. Afterall, it’s worth remembering that all these big things happening are for the benefit of future generations and our communities throughout Southland. Latest News ![]() Southland GDP up on pre-Covid levels The latest quarterly economic report for Southland to 31 March 2022 shows promising signs for the economy. The report from economic consultants Infometrics shows our GDP has increased by 5.4% (above the national average) and we have the lowest unemployment rate since 2013 at 2.6%, while population has remained stable to June 2021 at 102,700. You can read it by clicking on the link below. ![]() Great South at MEETINGS A joint approach was taken to promoting Southland as a business events destination at MEETINGS 2022 in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Great South attended along with the Invercargill Licensing Trust and TW Events & Incentives to showcase the region and its venues. The two-day Business Events Industry Aotearoa event draws together New Zealand and international players in the business events and incentives sector. ![]() Fiordland dark sky application on track Great South is on track to submit an application to the International Dark Sky Association for Fiordland National Park at the end of this year. In the meantime we are working with businesses to develop tourism product and experiences that take advantage of the night sky. Read more below. ![]() Destination Strategy review workshops Workshops are being held to review the Southland Murihiku Destination Strategy The first workshop on 26 July covers Governance, partnerships and workforce challenges. To find out about all five workshops and to take part click on the button below. ![]() Trades: addressing worker shortages Our popular Girls in Trade day saw about 100 female high School students from all over Southland get hands-on experience in skills associated with trades. Part of Great South's Southland Youth Futures programme, the event is about addressing worker shortages in trades and extending the available workforce. Business News and opportunities ![]() Murihiku Sustainable Tourism Programme - Pilot Is your tourism business actively exploring ways to become more sustainable? Great South has developed the Murihiku Sustainable Tourism Programme. The pilot programme will involve workshops, one-on-one sessions, plus access to expert advice over 12 weeks from 25 July to 14 October 2022. The investment is $500 + GST per business. Expressions of interest close 5pm Friday 8 July. ![]() Employers: can you help? One of the goals of our Southland Youth Futures programme is to strengthen connections between youth and local employers. We are looking for employers from all sectors to showcase the career opportunities available in their industry. Are you interested in being involved? Please email us below. ![]() Tourism business funding - two funds closing soon! If you have a tourism business within the Southland District Council rating area, you could be eligible for any of three funds as part of the Government's Tourism Communities: Support, Recover and Re-set Plan. This includes the Kickstart fund with $10,000 to $50,000 available per business to get ready for the return of international travellers. Business Advisory Support and Advice Implementation grants are also available and applications for these funds close 31 August. Find out more and apply online below.
