Pānuitia mai ngā whakahaerenga o Toi Rangatira


A ‘Proud To be Māori Always’ moment was made at the hikoi this week, the momentous stand in unity for protection of rights will forever be etched in history. Stand tall and lean into our taonga that make us uniquely Māori.

We celebrate Ngāti Toa artist who have been actively expressing ngā taonga tuku iho in their end of year exhibition and have wānanga kākahu and taonga puoro in Whakatu that’s coming up.

TAONGA PŪORO WĀNANGA

Join Mātanga Puoro, Tāmihana Kātene (Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Whatua) as he returns to Te Tauihu to deliver a series of 2-day taonga puoro wānanga exploring te oro o Tāwhirimātea and Tāwhirirangi. 

Registrations for Whakatū Nelson wānanga are open now open for 7-8th December. Spend the weekend creating your own taonga puoro to start building your own collection.  

To support whānanu with accessing mātauranga toi, these wānanga have no cost to attend thanks to support from DOC.

KĀKAHU WĀNANGA IN WHAKATŪ

Have you wanted to learn to make kākahu? Missy Broughton (Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti ) and Shanell Kelly (Ngāti Toa) will be hosting a 2-day wānanga on 7-8th December in Whakatū.  

We will be learning traditional tecniques in whatu kakahu using both traditional and contemporary materials and harakeke. The goal is to complete a small pākē as individuals or a full kakahu by the end of the weekend. 

With the support of Rātā Foundation, this wānanga has no cost to attend and participate

TOI RANGATIRA KI HONGOEKA EXHIBTION

During the AGM held at Hongoeka marae, our tauira will be exhibiting their mahi toi for whānau and iwi to see what they have been learning and creating in their classes.  

On display will be mahi whakairo, tukutuku, kōwhaiwhai and tāniko over 29 November to 1 Dec.  

Come and celebrate the emerging artists as they share their skills to becoming Ngāti Toa practitioners helping to ensure our mātauranga toi tuku iho remain active within our iwi.
