Ngā Hau Māngere – Old Māngere Bridge replacement project

18 August 2022

Ngā Hau Māngere

Known during construction as the Old Māngere Bridge Replacement, the bridge has recently been gifted the name Ngā Hau Māngere by mana whenua to reflect the cultural history and landscape in which it sits.  In translation it means the 'gentle lazy winds'.

Click here to watch the video about the name of the bridge.

Ngā Hau Māngere opens on 27 August and we hope you’re able to join us and celebrate in the afternoon.

Update: Anti-slip deck coating

Given construction started in early 2020 when COVID-19 arrived on our shores, we are very fortunate that the opening date of the new bridge has only been minimally impacted by the multiple lockdowns.

However, we have not been able to complete the permanent anti-slip coating which will be added to the deck. We need a block of good weather which we will get over summer. In the meantime, a temporary deck coating as seen in the photo above has been applied to the bridge.

To apply the new coating we will need to close the bridge temporarily towards the end of the year. During the closure, security guards will be reinstated on the SH20 underpass as this will be the only way for people to cross the Manukau Harbour.

We’ll keep you updated and let you know when this work will be carried out.

An architectural feature at night

We mentioned in our June e news that we have started work on installing the lights on the bridge. We’ve captured this great image from the night they were tested.
