Waikanae River bridge clip-on update

Work on the installation of a new clip-on shared path for Waikanae Bridge on old State Highway 1 will begin in the new year.

To install this clip-on bridge as safely and efficiently as possible, the work requires traffic management and a significant detour for southbound vehicles. To minimise disruption to the Waikanae community and businesses over the busy Christmas and New Years’ period, we decided to defer installation until 16 January 2024. Installation is expected to continue through to May/June.

Once installed, the clip-on bridge will make crossing Waikanae River much safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Key information

  • The bridge will be closed to southbound traffic during installation, with a detour via the Expressway.
  • Southbound school buses will still be able to cross the bridge.
  • Access for northbound traffic will remain open with temporary speed restrictions in place.
  • For safety reasons, pedestrians won’t be able to access the bridge while traffic management is in place. Access to the Waikanae River trails either side of the bridge remains open.
  • Traffic management staff will be on site 24/7 to allow emergency vehicles across the bridge.
  • Access to homes and businesses on the Main Road will be available 24/7 during the construction period.

While we understand this work will create some delays for road users and will impact on pedestrians during construction, we’re committed to improving safety for all pedestrians and cyclists. By creating a shared path well-separated from other road users, we’re creating a safer and more enjoyable journey – not just for cyclists and pedestrians – but for motorists too.

Thank you for your patience while we complete these works.

Keeping safe around roadworks

Thousands of roadworkers are working on the roads for you every day, and every day they experience dangerous behaviour by people travelling through worksites.

Respect roadworkers and travel safety through their worksites. Stick to the posted speed limit, drive carefully, and follow any signage you see and any instructions you receive. Whether they’re doing traffic management to keep you safe or they’re on the tools, the last thing we want is for workers to cop abuse, be injured, or worse.

Most of us are patient and supportive of the job roadworkers are doing. We appreciate you and we know the workers do too. Like all of us, roadworkers deserve to get home at the end of the day.
