Parents newsletter - February 2024This is a busy time of year, with students often preoccupied with their studies as midterms approach and assignments build up. With the upcoming winter break, it’s a good time for students to take a pause, check in on their wellness and use the resources available to them. It’s also a good time of year to start thinking about summer plans, including the summer job search. Whether looking for input on part-time jobs or for guidance in selecting a full-time career, our career experts are trained to help with the job application process. Important Dates and Deadlines Monday, February 19, 2024: Statutory holiday. University closed. Monday, February 19 to Friday, February 23, 2024: Winter break. No classes Winter Break is Almost Here The winter break is a great time to rest, rejuvenate and regroup for the remainder of the term. With midterms coming up, it’s important students prioritize both their coursework and their wellness. Carleton has many resources to help them stay on track, from academic support and employability to wellness. During the winter break, the university is closed on Monday, February 19, 2024, for the Family Day holiday. While classes are paused from Tuesday, February 20 to Friday, February 23, 2024, campus remains open. Celebrating Black History Month February is Black History Month, an opportunity for our community to learn and celebrate the cultural diversity and achievements of Black Canadians from the past, present and future. Students are encouraged to join Umoja Black Community Engagement Program in celebrating Black History Month with an assortment of events and activities to commemorate Black history. Throughout the month, Ravens can visit the Black History Month webpage as the Carleton community mobilizes to celebrate and highlight Black leadership, achievements and experiences.

Carleton Free Tax ClinicThe Sprott Tax Students' Association (STSA) is here to help with their annual tax clinic. All tax returns are filed at no cost. Your student must fill out the tax clinic's client intake form and the tax clinic team will review it to determine if their tax return is within the scope of the tax clinic. Students will be emailed a link to book an appointment between Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Winter Term Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) The Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) offers free, course-specific study sessions known as Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) which facilitates peer-to-peer support in course content and study skills. To see if a course is PASS supported, please check the schedule posted on the CSAS website. Now Hiring – Student Summer Orientation Leaders Is your student looking for a summer job? The Student Experience Office (SEO) is now hiring students for Summer Orientation Leaders! These are full-time, paid positions from May to September. Students must apply by Monday, February 26, 2024 at noon. Does Your Student Want to Boost Their Academic Writing Skills to the Next Level? The Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) offers weekly support sessions on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., focusing on applying and practicing select grammar points, syntax and vocabulary development into academic writing. Your student can attend in-person, on the fourth floor of the MacOdrum Library, or virtually over MS Teams. Carleton Mobile Updates Carleton Mobile has been updated to version 1.0, with exam schedules, a campus map and additional features available to logged out users. Emergency Notification System Test on Tuesday, February 20 A test of Carleton’s Emergency Notification System (ENS) will be conducted on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at approximately 11:15 a.m. This test will include three types of notifications: campus computer screen messages, emails sent out to all Carleton University addresses, and a push notification through the Carleton Mobile app. This is a test of the ENS system, and no action is required. 2024-2025 Residence Applications Is your Raven looking to live in Residence next year? Housing and Residence Life Services is now accepting online applications for the 2024-2025 academic year. The deadline for upper year students to be included in the first round of offers is Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Lottery results will be communicated on Friday, February 16, 2024. Those who receive a time ticket via the lottery will receive further instructions on the new self-selection process on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Discover Carleton Grad Studies Is your student thinking of grad school? Discover what Carleton has to offer. Students can explore Carleton's graduate programs, select their interests and create their own personalized digital viewbook in seconds. Your student can get the information they want instantly, online and delivered to their inbox.
Planning to Complete Course Work at Another University? Is your student interested in studying at another university during the summer term? Carleton degree students may be eligible to gain credit for courses taken at another recognized university through a Letter of Permission (LOP). Details on eligibility and a link to the online application form can be found on the Letter of Permission page. Help Your Student Change Their Program Elements Does your student want to add a concentration or minor to their degree? Perhaps they want to try another major altogether? Many changes to their degree can be made through the Change of Program Elements feature of Carleton Central (by logging into Carleton360 through the current students website). Before your student submits the Change of Program Elements request, encourage them to check with either an advisor in the Academic Advising Centre (AAC) or with the academic department responsible for their program to ensure that they are eligible to make the change they are requesting.
