Roadworks over the upcoming Waitangi Day long weekend

All non-essential roadworks will pause for the Waitangi Day long weekend with contractors shutting down sites from midday Thursday 5 February until midnight on Sunday 8 February.

You may still see some of our crews out on the roads repairing potholes, responding to incidents, or carrying out essential work.

If you're planning on travelling over Waitangi Day weekend, please remember to check our Journey Planner for the most up to date information.

SH1 Picton to Christchurch

SH1 north of Spring Creek

Work is underway to rebuild a 1 kilometre section of highway with construction due to be completed by the end of March. The team is working from Mondays to Saturdays (no work on Sundays).

Stop/go traffic management is in place until 12 noon on Thursday 5 February. No work will be carried out over Waitangi weekend and lanes will be open in both directions – however the 30km/h temporary speed limit will still be in place as the site will have been recently sealed.

Stop/go traffic management will resume on Monday 9 February until Thursday 19 February. Then from Sunday 22 February the crew will switch to night works only between 6pm and 7am until Thursday 5 March.

Expect 10 minute delays during work hours. A 30km/h temporary speed limit applies at all times.

SH1 Lake Grassmere to Wharanui

Pre-seal work continues at Lake Grassmere, Taimate and Wharanui until Wednesday 11 February, with the exception of Waitangi Day weekend (6 to 8 February). Stop/go traffic management is in place from 6.30am to 6pm each day. Expect delays of up to 5 minutes. This work was originally planned to be completed during the last couple of weeks but was impacted by wet weather.

SH1 Hapuku

Road rebuilding work continues between Factory Road and Skevingtons Road until 31 March. Work is underway on weekdays from 6am to 6pm, with some weekends as needed to keep the project moving. Stop/go traffic management is in place, and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit applies. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

Read our Traffic Bulletin for more details about the works at Hapuku, as well as Peketa and Glasnevin (see below).

SH1 Peketa

Seawall repairs are underway Mondays to Sundays until Sunday 15 February, from 6am to 8pm. Stop/go traffic management is in place, with delays of up to 15 minutes expected. Twice a day, the road will be held in both directions for up to 20 minutes so an excavator can be lowered or raised below the road during low tide.

SH1 north of Amberley at Glasnevin

A road rebuild is taking place until 30 January, from 6am to 6pm on weekdays. Northbound traffic will be closed with a detour in place, and the site will operate 24/7 from Monday to Saturday, opening both directions when possible. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit applies. The detour is via SH1, Douglas Road, Mount Brown Road, and Georges Road, and will add about 7 minutes to travel time. The southbound lane remains open.

SH6 Blenheim to Nelson

SH6 Mahers Road (upcoming work to begin on 9 February)

A 500-metre section of highway about 5km north of Renwick will soon be rebuilt. Crews will establish onsite from Monday 9 February and will begin work on Monday 16 February. Work will be carried out Mondays to Fridays, from 7am to 6pm. Stop/go traffic management will be in place during work hours and a 30 km/h speed limit will apply at all times. Drivers should expect delays of up to 10 minutes. This work is scheduled to be completed by Friday 20 March.

Read our Traffic Bulletin for more details.
