The Hooded Plover is South Australia’s most threatened beach-nesting bird, and right now they need our help. These small shorebirds rely entirely on our ocean beaches to nest and raise their chicks. For the first 35 days of life, Hooded Plover chicks cannot fly, which makes them especially vulnerable. In Victor Harbor, Council is working with BirdLife Australia throughout the breeding season (August–March) to protect these fragile families. A nest has been identified in Hayborough, and another pair is preparing to nest at Yilki. How you can help - Follow all signage along beaches
- Leash your dog near nesting sites
- Give space around nesting areas
- Share this message with others
Your support could mean the survival of a Hooded Plover chick this season.

Kick-start for young Southern Fleurieu musicians
Eight emerging artists from the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula are set to receive a unique opportunity to professionally record and produce their own music. The initiative, coordinated by the City of Victor Harbor’s Youth Development Team and fully funded by Country Arts SA, will provide local musicians with free studio sessions to create, record and refine their original work. Each participant will also benefit from mentorship with industry experts, gaining practical insights into both music production and the broader industry. All recording will take place at Ridley Farm Studio in Hindmarsh Valley, giving young artists access to a professional environment where they can develop their own extended play (EP). The program
aims to support aspiring musicians to take their first steps toward a career in the industry while also raising the profile of regional arts. Applications are open to individual artists and bands aged 15–26 from across the Fleurieu Peninsula. Applicants should be able to demonstrate their creative output, either through demos, live performances, or an online presence. Those interested can apply before mid-December 2025. Advocating for Victor Harbor businesses
Mayor and CEO meet with the Minister for Tourism to support local businesses and address the algal bloom impact. This week, the Mayor and CEO met with Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison MP, to discuss key issues impacting our local economy. Supported by Business Victor Harbor, the meeting was an important opportunity to advocate for the region and its businesses. The discussion focused on the impact of the recent algal bloom on small businesses in Victor Harbor, including South Australia’s iconic Horse Drawn Tram. Reduced visitor numbers and the loss of operating days for some businesses have highlighted how vital tourism is, not only for our state, but for regional economies and small coastal towns like ours. The Minister welcomed the City’s tourism initiatives, which aim to strengthen the regional economy and showcase the natural beauty that makes Victor Harbor a special destination. Further to this, the CEO will appear as a witness at the Federal Government’s Senate Inquiry into Algal Blooms in South Australia in Victor Harbor this Friday.

Did you know you can recycle old mobile phones, aluminum coffee pods, and batteries right here at the City of Victor Harbor Civic Centre? Simply drop them in the designated bins located in the foyer at 1 Bay Road. Recycling these items helps keep harmful materials out of landfill and allows valuable resources to be reused. Mobile phones contain metals that can be recovered, batteries need careful disposal to prevent pollution, and aluminum coffee pods can be transformed into new products. By taking a few moments to recycle these items, you’re helping to reduce waste, conserve resources, and support a more sustainable community. Every small action counts toward protecting our environment for future generations.
The City of Victor Harbor acknowledges the Ramindjeri and Ngarrindjeri people, the Traditional Custodians of the land and surrounding waters where we live and work. We acknowledge their deep connection to Country and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. This respect is extended to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia.
