January 2020

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is progressing work to complete safety improvements on one of Auckland’s busiest cycleway road crossings.  Work includes the construction of raised tables at three pedestrian crossings on the St Lukes Road bridge over State Highway 16. The crossings are located where the busy Northwestern Cycleway crosses St Lukes Road and connects with the St Lukes Cycleway.

The Transport Agency has worked with Auckland Transport and Bike Auckland to develop a design that improves safety for people on foot and on bikes connecting between the local cycle network, schools and community facilities such as the local parks and reserves.

The construction work started last week and is expected to be complete by the end of February/early March 2020.

Good progress on first weekend

Work over the first weekend went as planned with the island next to the St Lukes off-ramp being completed. Works included saw cutting, demolition, dig out, new kerbs, repositioning of lighting and traffic signals, installing new tactile paving, and concreting the island.

Demolition and reinstatement of the St Lukes Road footpath got underway and the area next to the traffic island was finished.

Demolition of the footpath towards Duncan Maclean Link also began.  This night work is to continue this week at night so the concrete can be poured for the new footpath this coming weekend.

Weekend of Friday 31 January to Monday 3 February

The focus for the second weekend is on completing the speed table on the westbound off-ramp. This will be poured on Saturday morning and allowed to cure (gain strength) over the rest of the weekend to enable it to be opened on Monday morning (3 February).

Preparations will start for the speed tables to be built at the Great North Road intersection and the Duncan Maclean intersection along with work on the St Lukes Road footpath. These works include saw cutting, demolition, dig out, new kerbs, repositioning of lighting and traffic signals, installation of new tactile paving, and pouring concrete on the island.

The no left turn from the off-ramp will remain in place, as will the detour route via Arch Hill, Kingsland and Morningside.  Pedestrian access will be maintained on both sides of the bridge with traffic controllers on site to assist those on foot and on bikes through the work site as required.

The limits on access to and from Duncan Maclean Link in place for Tuesday 28 to Friday 31 January will continue over the weekend and into next week (see map below).

Monday 3 February to Friday 7 February - day and night shifts

Next week the work in Duncan Maclean Link will be in both the day and night shifts.  These run from 9am to 5pm and 9pm to 5am respectively.

There will be the same range of closures as last weekend with:

  • no right turn from Duncan Maclean Link into St Lukes Road
  • no right turn from St Lukes Road into Duncan Maclean Link
  • no left turn from St Lukes Road into Duncan Maclean Link.

The only option for westbound traffic on Duncan Maclean Link at St Lukes Road will be to turn left.

There will again be a diversion in place for those intending to turn right from St Lukes Road into Duncan Maclean Link.  People can also use New North Road as an alternative route.

As usual, traffic controllers will be on-site to assist people on foot and on bikes through the site.

The work on Duncan Maclean Link will include widening of footpaths, preparing the road surface, and building kerbs. We will also be pouring concrete for the St Lukes Road footpath.

During the night shift we will also be working on the Great North Road intersection and on the west-bound motorway on-ramp intersection.  There will be no left turn onto the ramp from St Lukes Road.
