West WaikatoWork starting next week SH3/30 Te Kūiti: Road resurfacing on SH3 Carroll Street, Awakino Road and SH30 Waitete Road in Te Kūiti starts Sunday 18 January. This work will be completed 7 nights a week, between 8pm and 6am, and expected to take 2.5 weeks to complete. To enable the work to take place efficiently and safely, there will be stop/go traffic management between Duke Street and SH30 Awakino Road. SH30 Awakino Road will be closed between Carroll Street and Rora Street. Light vehicles will be detoured via Awakino Road, Taupiri Street, Alexandra Street, Rora Street to rejoin SH3. Heavy vehicles. Stop/go traffic management will be in place on SH30 Waitete Road and SH3 Awakino Road and Carroll Street. More information SH3 Rukuhia to Te Awamutu: Chipsealing between Rukuhia and Te Awamutu will begin on Sunday 18 January. The site has been divided into 8 sections, with work on the first 4 sections starting Monday 19 January. This stage is expected to take approximately 1 week to complete. Crews will then return on Sunday 8 February to complete the remaining 4 sections. Work will take place Sunday to Thursday, both during the day and at night. Stop/go traffic management will be in place while the work is ongoing, followed by aftercare on the worksite which will include rolling, sweeping, and line marking. More information SH1C Kahikatea Drive, Hamilton: Road resurfacing will start on Sunday 18 January and take 2 weeks to complete between Alison Street and Tawa Drive on SH1C. Crews will be working between 8pm and 5am each night Sundays to Thursdays. There will be stop/go traffic management in place while the work is ongoing. Work starting soon SH31 Kāwhia Road: A road rebuild will begin in late January near Te Rauamoa Road. The work will be done in 2 phases, shoulder and drainage work followed by the road rebuild. The work is expected to take 6 weeks to complete. Stop/go traffic management will be in place 24/7 with a temporary speed limit while the work is ongoing. More information Work underway SH1/SH29 Piarere intersection: From Monday 12 January (7am – 6pm) for 2 weeks, there will be a lane shift and reduced speed limit of 30km/h in place. while the team carries out shoulder widening works on the Hamilton-bound lane of SH1. Resident access will be maintained with left in/left out turning movements permitted to and from Karāpiro Heights. Minor delays are expected. More information SH31 Kāwhia Road: Traffic management will continue at various slip sites until repairs are completed, which is currently expected by mid-2026. During this time, motorists may encounter stop/go operations, temporary speed limits, and short delays. Motorists should allow extra time for your journey, follow all temporary traffic management and posted speed limits, and take care through work areas. |

South WaikatoSH1 Tīrau to Waiouru accelerated maintenance project: Since season 2 of the Tīrau to Waiouru accelerated maintenance project (T2W) kicked off in September 2025, it’s made amazing progress. We’re now approximately 70% complete across SH1 between Piarere in the north and Waiouru in the south and have laid approximately 30,000 tonnes of asphalt stretching 22.3 lane kilometres. This year has started with a hiss and a roar and will be a busy one. Below is a snapshot of the work that’s underway now. Please note there will be delays on SH1 that will vary according to the work being carried out. You’ll need to allow extra time to complete your journey. Work starting next week SH1 Putāruru to Tokoroa: To allow for chip sealing work, daytime stop/go traffic management is scheduled to be in place from 7am to 6pm on the Puriri passing lane on Monday 19 January and on West Road on Tuesday 20 January. SH1 Tokoroa township: Pre-work is underway along SH1/Mossop Road to prepare for rebuilding the road surface. We have 2 sites to complete in Tokoroa township and will begin with rebuilding SH1/Chambers Street, followed by SH1/ Mossop Road. From Wednesday 21 January, night work is scheduled to begin on SH1/Chambers Street for 3 night shifts, then move onto SH1/Mossop Road for 11 night shifts. Work will take place on Sunday to Thursday nights between 7pm and 6am, under stop/go traffic management. No work will occur on Sunday 25 January and Monday 26 January due to Auckland Anniversary weekend. Outside of these hours, the road will remain open, with temporary speed restrictions in place through the work zone. While night work is underway, entry to and exit from Chambers Street via SH1 will be closed and a local detour will be available. SH1 remains open under stop/go. Mossop Road will remain open under stop/go when work is underway here. Work starting soon SH32 Whakamaru Road: Day works start Wednesday 28 January and will be ongoing for 5 weeks. The work will take place between 6.30am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday. There will be 2-way stop/go traffic management in place. SH1 Motuoapa: A road rebuild will take place on a 650m section of SH1 through Motuoapa from Tuesday 27 January to Thursday 5 March. Crews will remove the existing pavement, replace base layers and lay new asphalt to improve the long‑term condition of the road. Works will occur during the day only, times will be confirmed closer to the date. One lane will be closed at a time, with stop/go traffic management in place throughout construction. A reduced speed environment, pedestrian restrictions and limited parking will apply within the active work area. One lane will remain open at all times. Access for affected residents and businesses will be managed directly with property owners. Work underway SH5/SH28 Harwoods Road: Construction of a roundabout at this intersection east of Tīrau is well underway. The closure of SH28-Harwoods Road has now ended. Traffic will be on the new roundabout in March 2026. More information SH1 Raketapauma (Waiouru South): A road rebuild started on Monday 5 January and continues until the end of January. There will be stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed limit in place during the day. Some stop/go may be required overnight. SH1 Ātiamuri to Wairākei: Overnight stop/go began on Sunday 11 January and is scheduled to continue until mid-January. We’ll be working on the road from Sunday to Thursday nights from 7pm to 6am, under stop/go traffic management. Outside of these working hours, the road will be open, with temporary speed restrictions throughout the work zone. SH1 Tīrau to Putāruru: Overnight stop/go is in place from early January to early February to undertake a road rehabilitation at the intersection of SH1/Whites Road. SH1 Waitahanui: Overnight stop/go is in place at Waitahanui for asphalting. Work is between 7pm and 6am. There are temporary speed limits in place during the day. Please prepare for some delays. SH1 Desert Road: Night work began on 7 January and is scheduled to continue until mid-February in 2 locations on SH1 at Poutu and Puketarata Hill, north and south of the SH1/SH46 intersection. We’ll be working on the road between 7pm and 6am on Sunday to Thursday nights, under stop/go traffic management. Outside of the working hours, the road will be open under temporary speed restrictions through the work zone. SH49 Volcanic Loop Highway: Day works have restarted between 6.30am and 6.30pm each day near Tangiwai. There is 2 way stop/go traffic management in place with a temporary reduced speed limit. The work will be ongoing for 4 weeks. |

North WaikatoWork starting next week SH1 Dragway Road to Hampton Downs: There will be a full southbound closure from Sunday 18 to Tuesday 20 January between 9pm and 5am. Traffic will still be able to travel south using one of the northbound lanes. SH1 Hampton Downs to Te Kauwhata: There will be a full southbound closure from Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 January between 9pm and 5am. Please use the recommended detour via Whangamarino Road. SH1 Te Kauwhata and Rangiriri interchange: There will be a full southbound closure between Te Kauwhata and Rangiriri interchange for maintenance. SH2 Mcpherson Road to Irish Road: Stop/go traffic management will be in place between Mcpherson Road and Irish Road on Sunday 18 January between 9pm and 5am for maintenance. |
