Where Every Possession Counts: The Road to March Begins Now

Shawn Daly                                                            President, West Hartford Girls Basketball League

Dear ,

I wish a Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!!!

As we enter Week 7 of the West Hartford Girls Basketball League season, we typically have a clear playoff picture coming into focus. This year, however, the standings remain remarkably fluid. In both the Juniors and Seniors Divisions, playoff positioning is far from settled, and every remaining regular-season game carries significant implications.

In this edition, you will find important updates on the playoff race, a key Juniors Division schedule adjustment, tournament results from the February Frenzy, reminders about our upcoming Food Pantry Drive and Skills Competition Day, along with important coaching and rules points designed to strengthen the quality and integrity of our league. Please take a few minutes to read carefully — several of these updates directly impact players and families over the next three weeks.

📰LEAGUE LINES

🖼️ Playoff Picture

Juniors Division

With two games remaining in the regular season, nearly every team remains in contention for playoff positioning. All eight teams will participate in Playoff Sunday on March 1. Seeding will determine the following matchups:

  • 8th seed vs. 7th seed

  • 6th seed vs. 5th seed

  • 4th seed vs. 1st seed

  • 3rd seed vs. 2nd seed

The winners of the 4 vs. 1 and 2 vs. 3 games will advance to Championship Sunday on March 8 to compete for the Juniors Division Championship.

With so much parity this season, the final two weeks promise competitive and meaningful basketball across the board.

Seniors Division

The Seniors Division remains equally compelling. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs.

  • Revolution is currently tied with Common Good, but holds the top seed due to its head-to-head victory earlier this season.

  • El Pollo Guapo and On the Court are tied for third. On the Court currently holds the edge after defeating El Pollo Guapo 25–23 earlier this year.

  • El Pollo Guapo has an immediate opportunity to even the tiebreaker when they face On the Court tomorrow.

  • Dumont Law remains within striking distance and will likely need two wins to secure a playoff berth.

  • Trinh Law could very well influence the playoff field as a spoiler down the stretch.

Every possession matters from this point forward.

📅 Juniors Division Schedule Change – February 22

Due to cancellations from Winter Storm Benjamin on January 25, the league has approved a schedule modification based on a recommendation from the Juniors Division Head Coaches.

Normally, teams play an 8-game season, facing each opponent once and one team a second time. Rather than repeating matchups in the final week, the February 22 schedule will now mirror the originally cancelled January 25 slate.

As a result:

  • Juniors teams will play a 7-game regular season.

  • All teams will face every opponent once.

  • Competitive balance is preserved heading into the playoffs.

We appreciate the flexibility of our coaches and families in implementing this fair and practical solution.

🏆 Corpus Christi Middle School – February Frenzy Tournament

Now in our fifth year participating, WHGBL once again fielded:

  • A JV All-Star Team (5th & 6th graders)

  • A Varsity All-Star Team (7th & 8th graders)

The JV team opened Thursday night with a tough loss to the host school, Corpus Christi Middle School (40–8). They return to action this morning at 9:00am against St. Rita Middle School of Hamden.

The Varsity All-Stars delivered an impressive 24–14 victory over John Paul II Regional Catholic School of Middletown and will play Corpus Christi’s Varsity team tonight at 7:50pm.

We encourage families to come out and support these players competing against strong regional programs. If attending, please take photos and share them with the league so we may post them to our website.

🍞 Food Pantry Drive – February 22

On Sunday, February 22, all West Hartford basketball leagues will unite in support of the West Hartford Food Pantry.

Collection boxes will be located at Conard and Sedgwick during games.

Please begin setting aside:

  • Non-perishable food items

  • Canned goods

  • Pasta, rice, cereal

  • Or consider adding a few extra items during your next grocery trip

We will continue to provide reminders. For additional information, please see the flyer at the bottom of this newsletter or contact DANIELLE WEISS directly.

🏅 Skills Competition Day – March 7

Our annual Skills Competition Day will take place on Saturday, March 7, beginning immediately after the Seniors Division semi-final playoff games (approximately 12:30pm – 4:00pm).

Minors and Juniors Division Events:

  • Kick the Cones

  • Knockout

  • Hot Shot

Seniors Division Events:

  • 3-on-3 Tournament

  • Hot Shot

Trophies or medals will be awarded to winners and runners-up.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Players who earn awards must be present on Sunday, March 8 during the awards ceremony to receive their recognition. Awards will not be held, delivered later, or distributed to coaches or teammates. No exceptions.

🏀COACHES’ CORNER

League officials have observed a significant and encouraging improvement in the level of play across all three divisions. Through two-thirds of the season, games have been competitive, well-officiated, and smoothly managed. Thank you to our coaches for your leadership.

In the spirit of continual improvement:

🗑️Minors Division – Foul Shot Alignment

Players should begin learning proper positioning on the lane blocks and beyond the arc during foul shots. Referees are now consistently calling shooting fouls, and players must understand correct placement.

🛡️Juniors Division – Man-to-Man Defense

Players should not “chase” opponents around the court. Proper defensive positioning requires staying between their player and the basket, reducing vulnerability to screens and backdoor cuts.

🛡️All Divisions – Defensive Court Awareness

Introduce the “pointing method”:

  • One hand pointing to the player being guarded.

  • One hand pointing to the player with the ball.

This reinforces help-side awareness and spatial positioning.

🔁Mid-Quarter Substitutions

Game time is limited. Substitutions must be organized and efficient.

Assistant coaches should prepare players before substitutions are called. Head Coaches should not use substitutions as unofficial time-outs or as moments to assign defensive matchups. Empower players to communicate and determine matchups themselves.

Prepared teams transition seamlessly. Organized rotations preserve game integrity.

⚖️RULES REMINDER

📏Respecting Referee Calls

The league has observed instances where players are called for traveling, double dribbling, or illegal screens, only to be told by coaches to “keep doing what you’re doing.”

This undermines rule adherence and player development.

Positive reinforcement does not mean dismissing officiating. Coaches should:

  • Affirm the referee’s call.

  • Explain the violation constructively.

  • Teach the correct technique moving forward.

Long-term development requires accountability.

🚫3-Second Violations

Referees are now monitoring players who “camp out” in the paint.

Teach players:

  • Begin counting immediately upon entering the paint.

  • Exit fully before reaching three.

  • Re-enter only after resetting outside the lane.

This reinforces movement, spacing, and fairness in offensive play.
