August has been a bumper month, with three workshops and events delivered since our last newsletter. We started August with our very first webinar format.

In case you have missed it, our 2024/25 business and art and culture grants are now live and accepting applications. Read more about these grant opportunities for your business below. 

The Economic Development Team have been hitting the streets in Hindmarsh! We are currently engaging with businesses to understand the employment opportunities in the area, this work will help to inform future marketing and promotion activities.

Women in the West - Celebrating Diversity

Thank you to all of the wonderful women who joined us last night at our Women in the West 'Celebrating Diversity and Women in Business' workshop earlier this month.

Adelaide Beaches Tourism Networking Event

Thank you to more than 100 tourism and hospitality operators who joined us at Big Shed Brewing last week for our latest Adelaide Beaches Tourism Networking Event!

Silver Fleece

A warm welcome to the new owners of City of Charles Sturt business, Silver Fleece, Melanie and Dean Flintoft! Our team paid a visit to welcome them and the previous employees returning to work following the business sale.

Currently 15/20 employees have returned, and there are plans to grow the number of employees shortly.

Melanie said, "It's very exciting to save the last mill in Australia!"

We are delighted to hear how they have saved the 73-year-old business from liquidation and their plans to expand Silver Fleece and their label, Sunset Lover.

Silver Fleece is located in our Hindmarsh precinct.

 

Governor Visit

Earlier this month the Governor of South Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia joined the City of Charles Sturt Economic Development team, Mayor Angela Evans, and CEO Paul Sutton for a tour of MacTaggart Scott Australia Pty Ltd. 

This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase a local business working on an international scale for many years, see our Governor of South Australia meeting with business leaders to understand the issues, and share our City of Charles Sturt Investment Attraction Prospectus. 

 
 

Burnout to Balance
Mastering Stress, Overwhelm and the Mental Load

Do you want to take care of your team's mental health and well-being, but find yourself not knowing where to start or how to make it a priority? Running your own business can be all-consuming, which is where our expert-led series of wellbeing workshops comes in.

This initiative is proudly supported by the South Australian Office of Small and Family Business. It addresses the recent finding reported in their 2023–2030 strategic plan, revealing that 62% of small business owners feel that their mental health has been negatively impacted over the last 12 months.

Western Business Leaders - Women in the West - Productivity & Building your Business from Home

Home-based business can create the freedom and flexibility in how you spend your time and make your money. But it can be challenging trying to stick to a plan, and working from home can be a lonely place.

This workshop will help home-based businesses and professionals connect with the broader Women in the West network and work with high-performance leader Ally Nitschke to build their confidence and capability. Attendees will learn how to focus on their goals, stay on track and grow without the stress and burnout.

The Talent Pipeline: Hiring Apprentices for your Salon Webinar

Local businesses, artists, arts organisations, musicians, or live music venues in the City of Charles Sturt can apply for grant funding to develop and deliver new ideas, initiatives or projects in our City.

New grants to power up your energy savings

Looking to make your small business more energy efficient? Apply now for a Small Business Energy Efficiency Grant.

If you’re a small business owner or not-for-profit organisation in South Australia, you can access matched funding of between $2,500 and $50,000 to invest in new equipment or solutions to cut your future energy bills.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 29 November 2024, unless funding is exhausted prior.

Energy Bill Relief

The Australian Government has announced that eligible small businesses will receive a rebate of $325 from the Australian Government on upcoming electricity bills.

The South Australian Government has extended the energy bill relief to include eligible small businesses receiving electricity through an embedded network, such as shopping centres.

Small Business Sustainability Support 

The Small Business Sustainability Support Program has been designed to help you develop strategies to improve your environmental sustainability, and to build the skills and capability to implement sustainable business practices. 

Eligible businesses will have the opportunity to access a  subsidised Business Sustainability Assessment within Stage 2.

Applications are now open for the Fearless Innovator Grants program! 

Female innovators can now apply for grants to help grow and scale their businesses into new markets through two streams: Accelerate (up to $10,000 to accelerate a business) and Scale Up (up to $30,000 to scale up a business).

Tasting Australia 2025

Tasting Australia is the country’s longest running eating and drinking festival. In 2025 Tasting Australia will take place from 2– 11 May, with events held across metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia. 

Applications are now open for next year's program.

Key Dates

  • Applications close – Fri 4 Oct 2024 – Applications submitted after this date attract $1000 late fee
  • Acceptance advised – Thu 10 Oct 2024
  • Website and printed program copy sent for your approval – Fri 1 Nov 2024
  • Website and printed program copy approval and payment due – Fri 8 Nov 2024
  • Online pre-Christmas launch – First week of December 2024
  • Printed program launch – Feb 2025

City of Charles Sturt Rebate Subsidy Program 
Rebates of up to $250 are available to assist individuals, businesses and groups with the costs of registering an event in this festival's associated events program. There is a total funding pool of $4,000. Please contact Vic Pisani, Place Leader, to learn more on vpisani@charlessturt.sa.gov.au.

The Adelaide Beaches website is the premier website for all there is to see and do and where to stay in the Western Region of Adelaide and you can be listed on it.

There is no cost to list your business on the ATDW and it is free to have your information featured on the Adelaide Beaches website.

Treebate Scheme

Buy and plant a tree on your property and we’ll give you back half of what you paid! Council will rebate you 50% of the purchase price of a tree you plant on your property up to a maximum rebate of $50 per tree.

Businesses may apply for a rebate for up to 10 trees.

Adelaide Green Clean

We recently caught up with Australian Green Clean, a family-owned award-winning business providing sustainable cleaning and waste management services for major festivals, events, education institutions, stadiums and venues as well as commercial properties throughout Australia. With over 450 staff, AGC are a proud South Australian business and believe that to live in the future we need to make dumping waste to landfill a thing of the past! 

Providing services to over 200 venues and large commercial sites as well as over 300 events each year across Australia, they are currently working in partnership with the Royal Adelaide Show to meet their zero waste goals. 

 

Beers Grow on Trees

Local businesses, Frigid.Cloud, EverGreen Gardening, and the City of Charles Sturt partnered for National Tree Day 2024, to raise a glass to a greener future. The partnership delivered a unique and impactful event on Sunday, 28 July at Bowden Brewing in Plant 3 Bowden.

The celebration went beyond the brew: a tree was planted for each pint purchased on National Tree Day.

 

Coffee in Common

The City of Charles Sturt is proud to have supported Coffee in Common with their sustainable targets.

Davide and Sean share their experience participating in our Business Support Program.

Their business has leveraged our pilot Responsible Cafes program and subsequently accessed grant funding to strategically achieve their sustainable goals.

We visited Jenn and Andy to talk about their experience with our Business Support Program.

We also spoke about their recent win at our inaugural City of Charles Sturt Business Recognition Awards, juggling family life and business, and what's next for their growing business.

 

Explore Art in Henley Beach during SALA Festival

Visit Henley Beach this month for a seaside stroll, explore the SALA artwork, and explore the shopping and dining while you’re there.

There are a number of South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival events proudly hosted in our City. You can find the list of all of the artists and their creative works here if you search by 'City of Charles Sturt'. You can also learn about all of the SALA exhibitions in Henley Beach here.

 

Supporting Fringe Artists

The City of Charles Sturt supports Fringe artists and creatives through:

  • $100 registration subsidies - reducing costs for all artists and events to be held in our City (automatically applied 
  • Arts Fund Grants of up to $5,000 and Live Music Grants of up to $4,000 for eligible projects
  • Woodville Town Hall - offering a range of different spaces and configurations for shows from an intimate to large scale events
  • Diverse range of affordable City of Charles Sturt operated spaces for shows or rehearsal venues. 
  • Connections to cultural community clubs and venues for collaboration opportunities or venue hire. 
 

James Brickworks

We are looking for creative ideas, from live music, illuminations, projection, markets and more. We have Arts and Culture Grants for new one off and time limited creative projects that encourage public engagement in the Arts and Live Music.

Adelaide Fringe 2025

The 2025 Adelaide Fringe venue registrations are open - it's completely FREE to register your venue and anyone can be involved. A Fringe venue doesn’t have to be an established theatre, pub, or club either. It can be a restaurant, café, florist, park, laundromat, caravan, warehouse, garage, cinema, foyer, anywhere, you name it. 

Venue registrations for the Adelaide Fringe are now open and more information can be found here.

 

You can search for current open tenders on the SA Tenders and Contracts website, which is commonly used for public tendering for major purchases of goods, services and works.
