Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

This Week's Summary

 
 

This week construction has commenced for 2026 at several sites across the Marlborough Roads Recovery network. 

With the exception of Northbank Road, all sites are under stop/go traffic management.

Work has resumed at three sites in the French Pass, located on Croisilles Road, Croisilles-French Pass Road, and Archers Road. 

In the Kenepuru, between Linkwater and the Heads, work has resumed in the following areas:

  • Moetapu Bay Road
  • Kenepuru Road, at four adjacent sites prior to the Mahau Road turn-off, and 1.5km prior to Portage Resort
  • Torea Road

Approximately 17km from the start of Northbank Road, a construction closure is in place from Tuesday 13 January until Friday 20 February.

On Port Underwood Road, approximately 1.5km past McCormicks Road, crews have resumed construction of a retaining wall.

On Queen Charlotte Drive on Mahikipawa Hill, work resumed on Monday 12 January to install a second culvert. 

On Monday 19 January, crews will commence work on Awatere Valley Road at the Upcot Saddle to install several culverts. 

All work is subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. In the event of unsuitable conditions, work will be rescheduled to the next suitable workday.

Road Closures

 
 

Northbank Road 

Crews have resumed work approximately 17km from the start of Northbank Road to clear a large slip. A construction closure is in place until Friday 20 February on the following days and times:

  • Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Saturday 24 January and Saturday 14 February from 8.30am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 4.30pm.

The closures are required to safely excavate the slip and manage rockfall.

Outside of these times unattended traffic lights will remain in place with delays of up to 5 minutes.

No work will occur over Waitangi weekend and crews will disestablish from site at 12pm on Thursday 5 February prior to this public holiday.

Kenepuru Road - from Monday 9 February

From Monday 9 February until 12pm on Friday 24 April construction closures are planned on Kenepuru Road on the below days and times: 

  • Monday to Thursday from 9.30am to 12pm, 12.30pm to 3pm and 3.05pm to 5pm.
  • Friday from 9.30am to 12pm, 12.30pm to 3pm.

Outside of these times stop/go traffic management will be in place with delays of up to 15 minutes.

During the opening times, traffic management will ensure vehicles do not get stuck between closure points.

Closure locations will be provided at least two weeks prior to the closures being in place.

French Pass

 
 

On Croisilles Road, approximately 4.2km before the Hope Drive/Wharf Road intersection crews are completing the drilling and grouting of permanent anchors. 

Crews are continuing minor drainage repairs and pavement stabilisation work approximately 1km before Okiwi Bay.

On Croisilles-French Pass Road, approximately 2km past Okiwi Bay, pavement preparation works have commenced this week.

All three sites in the French Pass are under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

Kenepuru

 
 

On Moetapu Bay Road, approximately 1.3km from the start of the road, crews have commenced the slip excavation and installation of culverts.  

At four adjacent sites approximately 3km before the Mahau Road turn-off, crews are completing retaining walls, installing culverts, and commencing pavement construction.

On Kenepuru Road, near Portage Bay, approximately 1.5km prior to Portage Resort, crews have recommenced excavation, gully backfill, and drainage installation.

On Torea Road, crews are continuing to progress the road retreat.

All sites in the Kenepuru are under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

Work will resume on Kenepuru Road, between the Mahau Road intersection and Broughton Bay on Monday 19 January. These works are for retaining wall construction and to install a culvert.  From Tuesday 20 January, stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes will be in place at two sites on this section of the road.

The Waitaria Bay Jetty is currently open to the public with the new jetty fully decked and the floating pontoon connected. On Monday 19 January crews are resuming work on the first section of the Jetty to install new handrails and ladders. Construction signage remains up, please be mindful of all notices in place.

 

 

Hydroseeding on Torea Road

 

 

Northbank

Crews have commenced work on the replacement of the Gillespie Bridge on Cat Creek Road. This week the old bridge is being dismantled.

 

 

Port Underwood

 
 

On Port Underwood Road, approximately 1.5km past McCormicks Road, crews are continuing to construct a retaining wall. This week they are backfilling the wall and commencing the pavement reinstatement. This site is under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

On Monday 19 January crews will establish a second site on Port Underwood Road in Tom Canes Bay to replace a culvert. Please expect minor delays. 

 

 

Queen Charlotte Drive

 
 

On Queen Charlotte Drive, approximately 4.2km from Havelock, crews have resumed work to install a second culvert and construct a concrete dish channel. This site is under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes. 

From Monday 19 January crews will commence multiple drainage repairs on Moenui Road.

 

 

Tennyson Inlet

 
 

Work has resumed on a retaining wall approximately 2km from the start of Archers Road. This week crews are installing the first culvert. When completed, a second culvert and concrete dish channel will be constructed. 

This site is under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

 

 

Kenepuru Road restrictions

 
 

Kenepuru Road is open to the public, with overweight and overlength vehicle restrictions in place. 

Reduced speed limit signage and temporary traffic lights are in place at Portage Heights and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). Both sites have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage.

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and side roads.

To apply for a permit for an over dimension vehicle to travel on Kenepuru Road, email recovery@marlboroughroads.com or call 0800 213 213. 

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road:

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Other recovery roads

Please be aware that on all roads, works may be in progress and/or traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads being closed at short notice. Regardless of the status of the road, please drive to the conditions.
