Climate Action Living Lab Here are the successful initiatives set to produce environmental, social and economic benefits to a climate-ready city. 🥁

Raising Rarity

Students to join conservationists to bring the endangered Swamp Everlasting (Xerochrysum palustre) back from the brink.

Scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne will work with two local primary schools to cultivate these endangered plants 🌻

Equoia power droids

These units will be replacing diesel and petrol generators at outdoor events for a cleaner, greener Casey.
This project will deploy the above mobile battery-powered “Power Droids” at Council-run events.

Bandicoot Buddies

This venture will monitor the vulnerable Southern Brown Bandicoot population in Casey using wildlife cameras.

Local schools and residents will be helping collect this data to keep our bandicoots healthy, happy and safe.

Koala corridors

To help safeguard Casey’s koala population, the project will use acoustic monitoring to record koala vocalisations.

Listening for their scary grunts will help us pinpoint where they are, despite their large range.

Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub

Scientists will collaborate with local secondary school students and teachers to co-design climate and energy educational materials.

Together, they’ll be able to develop information that’s both local and global, whilst empowering Casey’s youth.

Reducing chemical wetland weedicides

The project will trial a type of ultraviolet light as an alternative to chemical weed control in Casey’s wetlands.

UV-C radiation is used to disinfect drinking water overseas, but Federation University researchers hope it can also kill aquatic weeds.

All you need is proof of residency, an invoice of your items and a photo showing the product installed in your home.

Flora and fauna spotlight - Honey Brown Beetle (Ecnolagria grandis)

These slow-flying brown beetles are covered in a golden fuzz. Feeding on fungal and dead plant material, these little critters are part of your gardens' hard-working clean-up crews.

The 2cm long larva are sometimes found in large numbers. There is no reason to fear them - your garden is safe! Like the adult beetles, they also feed on dead plant material.

Who's there?

Who is visiting your backyard? Sometimes we don’t see the animals that visit our yards, but they leave clues behind including nibbled fruit and scats. Check out this website to see who has been visiting your garden!

Tricky topics - Coffee pods or capsules

Coffee pods may be a convenient way to enjoy your morning brew, but they can create loads of rubbish. What to do?

☕ Aluminium coffee pods are the easiest to recycle! Simply rinse them out and clean them of all coffee grounds, let them dry, and scrunch them into a larger ball of aluminium (such as foil) before placing them in your kerbside recycling bin.

Storing and sorting

It's that time of year - time to sort and store some of your summer's harvest.

If uncut, pumpkins can last for months! Apples, too, can feed you until next year, as can other pome fruits like pears, nashi and quinces. Make sure they're undamaged - otherwise, bottle or freeze them.

Produce storing tips

Roast apple and pumpkin soup

Happily, apples and pumpkins play well together in the kitchen.

So you'll always have apple-pumpkin muffins, pancakes, warm salad, marsala - or this sweet and mellow soup - to snack on all winter long.

Caring for chooks

Chickens are popular backyard companions - like this pair at Myuna Farm. From eggs in the morning to wandering around the backyard, they are entertaining feathered friends.

However, avian influenza is at large. Listen to Cathy Ronalds and Agriculture Victoria’s Dr Dianne Phillips on looking after the health and wellbeing of your chooks and maintaining good at-home biosecurity practices.
