SH58 Update

Community drop-in sessions next month

19 August 2025

Come along and meet the team from NZTA

Date:    Tuesday 02 September 2025

Morning drop-in:   9am – 11am

Evening drop-in:   5pm – 7.30pm

Venue:  Judgeford Golf Course, 328 Paremata Haywards Road, Judgeford.

NZTA is hosting two drop-in sessions in early September.

The drop-in sessions are a way for people from the community to come along and meet NZTA subject matter experts.

We’d love to meet you face-to-face to talk about projects and ongoing road maintenance and to answer any questions that you may have.

Our work affects your travelling experiences along SH58 and surrounding areas.  It’s an opportunity for you to ask questions and stay informed.

The representatives will be from the SH58 Safety Improvements Project, Wellington Transport Alliance, and Transmission Gully.

NZTA receives many enquiries from residents and businesses in the area, and by having subject matter experts available over these two sessions, we hope that you will walk away more informed.

It’s also a great opportunity for us to help the community ‘join the dots’ between the different projects, and the specialized work streams that NZTA is responsible for.

For example, construction project works are a separate group to the critically important ongoing highway repair and maintenance work, which is handled by NZTA’s Wellington Transport Alliance.

Please note that we are committed to listening and responding to concerns raised by members of the public at this event, but please ensure you do it in a manner that aligns with our values of manaakitanga (respect and care for others). We appreciate your understanding.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email:  safetySH58@nzta.govt.nz

Wellington Transport Alliance - SH58 Full Road Closure

Sunday 14 September, 10pm – 4am

What: Road closure for maintenance

Where: SH58 from Transmission Gully to SH2 Interchanges

When: Sunday 14 September, 10pm – 4am

A one-night maintenance closure is happening on SH58 from 10am on Sunday 14 September. The road will be fully closed for 6 hours.

This is separate to the ongoing SH58 Safety Improvements Project, and the closure is being conducted by the Wellington Transport Alliance; which maintains the region’s state highways on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Contractors will use this time to repair safety barriers, maintain vegetation, complete culvert inspections and compete other general maintenance work.

Routine maintenance is essential to keep highways safe for all road users. To avoid significant disruption, WTA has planned for several tasks to be done at night when traffic volumes are much lower.

Impact on residents and businesses - although SH58 will be closed for six hours - access for residents, businesses, business customers and emergency services will be maintained.

Accessing SH58 during the closure

Transmission Gully Interchange – Moonshine Hill Road properties

If your property is located between these two locations, you’ll need to access SH58 from the Transmission Gully Interchange during the closure. This will enable our pilot vehicle to assist in the best way.

Moonshine Hill Road – Haywards Interchange properties

If you’re located between these two locations, you will need to access SH58 from the Haywards Interchange during the closure.  This will enable escort through the closure in the best way.

Getting out of SH58 during the closure

Pilot vehicles will escort residents from properties.

DO NOT enter the road corridor without calling WTA – this is for the safety of everyone while the road is closed and work is being completed.

Traffic Management

Before the road closure, traffic management will be set up from 9pm.  Drivers may encounter slight delays from this time but will have normal access.

The highway closure will be strictly in place from 10pm – aim to enter closure points ahead of this time.  Vehicles must be escorted by a pilot vehicle when travelling on SH58 during the closure.

Drivers must await instructions from traffic crew, and expect a short wait before travelling with pilot vehicles.

More information on future closures

We’ll also be closing the road on:

Sunday 5 October,    both between 10pm and 4am.
Sunday 9 November, both between 10pm and 4am.

We’ll update our website with this information soon: nzta.govt.nz/wta
